Is there any way to block someone on Fluther?

Asked by cazzie (24516points) November 1st, 2010

Can we click on anything to ‘mute’ a particular Flutherers comments? Like an ‘ignore’ button?

No – you just have to train yourself to do it mentally.

Nope – and more than likely for good reason. Imagine the “ignore wars.” ;-)

I, personally, have gone as far as to PM someone and tell them that I would no longer be reading their responses generally…once.

I’m certain there will be fallout. But it’s fallout I’m willing to risk. ;-)

haha. I’ve asked this question before. @janbb is right. It’s a good life lesson. I’ve actually grown to lurve a few people I once wished I could block. ;)

This is actually very good mental training (with direct real life application)!

Why, have I already offended you? >:-P JK

If someone is bothering you by PM, you can contact a moderator or the founders.

I wrote a greasemonkey script that does this. But it is buggy as fuck and I am not willing to make it public. Apparently a official solution is coming. But you might be waiting for a long time.

wundayatta's avatar

With moderation, why would you need to block someone? Unless you are being bothered in PMs, in which case the moderators can be invoked there, as well.

This comes up from time to time, the various “persons in the know” usually weigh in with info. Here’s one, and here’s another. Hope these help.

Apparently there is a way. No one seems to notice me…

marinelife's avatar

@erichw1504 Right, you just accidentally got 14,000, almost 15,000 lurve points.

@janbb No – you just have to train yourself to do it mentally.

I agree. As much as I truly despise some of the fundamentalist vomit some members spew, I would be cheating myself of the full Fluther experience if I blocked them.

@erichw1504 Welcome to Fluther! Oh, wait, it seems you have been here a while. hmm…

I just skip some people’s answers that I don’t care to read, and usually never read their questions. But really, there are very few that I feel that way about and maybe a couple that I did, but changed my mind on.

Strange – I blocked @cazzie yet I can still see this question.

Sometimes I really wish there were, but then I think, no, I’d rather call people out on being an asshole/idiot than let them get away with it…

If someone is harassing you via PMs you can report it to mods and they will take care of it. If it is just matter of you having to deal with comments from other users that you don’t like then you have a number of options: if you believe the comment violates fluther guidelines you can flag it and the mods will evaluate it and if the comment does violate guidelines they will remove it, you can respond to the comment with a counterpoint and/or a well reasoned argument and hope for the best, you can mutter obscenities under your breath about what an idiot and a moron that user is (thats one of my favorite “buttons”) or you can ignore it. You are basically your own ignore button. Each and every one of us has an equal right to say what we want and to be a moron as long as it doesn’t violate the site’s guidelines.

erichw1504's avatar

@marinelife See, @chyna hasn’t even noticed me yet!

marinelife's avatar

@erichw1504 You made me laugh! I am not ignoring you.

erichw1504's avatar

@marinelife What did you say? I wasn’t listening.

I’m starting to hope for this. It seems many are more interested in attacking the person asking the questions and calling them liars rather than directly answering the questions themselves in a respectful way. I don’t have a problem with certain users who have an opposing viewpoint than mine but there are many on here who are extremely disrespectful so yes it would be nice to block a certain user from answering certain questions but I think this option should only be in the hands of people who are asking the questions themselves.

janbb's avatar

I have just been blocked by someon on another site and it is very painful. I would rather not see it instituted here although I can understand its uses.

chyna's avatar

Who the heck in their right mind would block a sweet little penguin? Happy to say that this user follows that user^^ to the ends of the earth, or at least all through Fluther.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@chyna and @janbb: I know! The avatar alone makes me happy!

digitalimpression's avatar

Damn. So there still isn’t a way. Oh well, mental it is.
