Is there any way to figure out how tall a baby will grow to be?

Asked by awomanscorned (11261points) November 2nd, 2010 from iPhone

I’ve heard at a certain age you can double their height and that gives you a good aproximate of how tall they’ll be. My almost two year old is exactly 36 inches which is kinda tall for her age. Is there any way to tell about how tall she’ll be?

Here’s a calculator: link

I have a friend who had used this type of height calculator for her children, and she says it was accurate. I have no personal experience to share.

I remember hearing that children usually reach half their adult height by the time they are 2 (I think it was 2 edited because I wrote the wrong number, not sure how I accidently wrote the wrong number twice, guess I shouldn’t start answering questions until I completely wake up). I don’t know how accurate it is though.

@noelleptc I meant to write 2, sorry, not 3. I just fixed it in my answer. I’m still half asleep, sorry.

Pediatricians have (and had) charts that use statistical likelihood to predict future heights.) My kids came in at 5’6’’ and 5’11’, as forecast.

We had a pediatrician that used a formula based on the parents’ heights to predict a child’s adult height. First, subtract six inches from your husband’s height. Compare it to your height. Whatever is exactly in the middle of those two numbers would be your child’s adult height. So, if you are 5’6” and your husband’s height minus six inches is 5’8”, your daughter would be 5’7” when she stops growing. For a boy, you do the same thing but add six inches to the mother’s height instead of subtracting from the father’s.

This was accurate for my husband and me, as well as our siblings. If it’s true for our kids, our daughter will be 5’2”. She’s 5’ tall now and 11 years old. I sure hope she grows more than another 2 inches! There are other variables, besides the unpredictable ways DNA can be passed through a family, nutrition, and lifestyle. There’s probably more like a potential height range for each child with life circumstances determining where in that range the final height will fall.

i remember the pediatrician predicting when my 2 kids were 3, using a growth chart. we wished we had a korean growth chart cuz the growth chart was based on white kids (also seemed like US chart was based on really old statistics). wonder if charts have been revised in 20 years.

I was told you double at 21/2 for boys and 2 for girls. So my 3 kids should all be taller. I guess they grew fast as youngens. @MissAusten‘s pediatrician didn’t cover them either!
