Can a sweater dress be tailored?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) November 5th, 2010

I have a 2ply cashmere sweater dress that needs to be taken in along the sides. Is this possible with this kind of fabric or should I just let it go and gift it to my neighbor’s horse?

It was sewn one time, it can be sewn again. What happened to your tailor?

She moved to New York.:(
I am wondering if most tailors do that.I am thinking they would have to use a serger?

@lucillelucillelucille I was hoping the mad cow didn’t get your tailor. What is a serger?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

A type of sewing machine that creates a finished edge on fabric.
That bull will be ready for another haircut by the time V gets here XD

I learned something new today. Thanks :)

I’ve never had anything tailored but I do have a serger! do you have a Better Business Bureau that you can check tailors out on?

I didn’t think of going through them,bu that is a start.I don’t live in a city either,so it is tough to find certain services that are good and close by.I have a regular sewing machine, but for that kind of fabric,I think a serger is the thing to use?I still would be hesitant to do that one myself.
A good tailor is wonderful to have:)

I wouldn,t try to sew cashmere. I’m sure there must be special feet to it won’t stretch.

@faye -I wondered that too.Even so,it does have some give to it.Also, because it is a knit, one would have to use a serger because of unraveling? To “seal” the rough edge,so to speak?
