Do you have a fundamental mandate to fulfill your potential?

Asked by Carl_Rogers (69points) November 5th, 2010

Do you think people naturally have a biological drive to strive upward and onward?

Like a plant in a dark room with one small window, do you strain to preserve the integrity of yourself? Do you push forward in order to reach the light?

Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it- especially when I procrastinate….

I think we do most of everything we do to survive, and that things like drive, ideals or motivation are merely tools to help you achieve survival.

If so, I am a big FAIL

Welcome to Fluther.

I don’t even know what this all means, but gosh it all sounds so exciting and inspiring. I just wanna… oh, I don’t know… go to sleep, or something.

I’m going to follow my biological urge to burrow down under the covers and sleep for about nine hours, give or take.

No, I go for the ostrich method, bury the head under the ground and look away from the light because it is too darn bright. Can’t motivate myself to move on and get ahead unfortunately.

I think there is a tremendous variation in human temperament, ability, personality, experience, nature vs. nurture stuff, what any individual wants from life; what the norms and social structure and culture, an history, of the particular society in which they grow up and live and all of these things affect the way in which any individual goes about or even can go about fulfilling his or her innate “potential.” In other words maybe yes, maybe no. It’s hard to say.
