I’ve always wanted to! It is amazing, apparently.
It’s aged pretty badly. It’s a great movie, but it really isn’t creepy or scary. The whole “horror” aspect of it was seeing side show people (midgets, pinheads, limbless folks, ect…).
Basically, its about a woman that marries a circus dwarf for a fortune he inherited. She was a psycho bitch and all of the other side show people turned her into one of them.
The coolest part for me is when a guy with no arms or legs rolls and lights a cigarette.
If human abnormalities creep you out; if you have a 1932 era mindset, and find people born with physical characteristics “outside normal limits” creepy, then yes, you will find it kind of creepy. I’m not saying I don’t, I’m not saying that some of what you will see in that film isn’t creepy, I’m not saying that I’m somehow above being a little creeped out by it. It’s stuff that even today, most of us are not used to encountering and might find very unsettling. Just take it for what it is. I’ve seen it and have just tried to have a little compassion and hope that people who might have had no other options than to be circus freaks in 1932 might be able to make better lives for themselves in 2010. Yes, I know, I’m self-righteous. Tell me something I don’t know already.
I own it, and I like it. Honestly, I don’t think it was supposed to be a horror. It’s really sympathetic to the ‘freaks’, they’re the characters the audience is set up to connect with. The director, Tod Browning, had a background in the Circus and wasn’t interested in taking advantage of carny folk, able bodied or no.
That said, it’s amazing when the human torso is crawling under the caravan with a knife in his teeth. You just know he’ll cut you, you just don’t know how.
