Where did the phrase "tongue in cheek" come from?

I mean, I can’t even talk that way….how did it come to mean sarcastic?

I read wikipedia, duh….thanks @Andreas~ (I guess the squiggly represents “tongue in cheek, eh?) I am groggy, and frustrated and I HATE that phrase!

From the article: ” :P may be used to signal jocularity and has been called the tongue-in-cheek symbol. The expression may be denoted more graphically with forms such as :-? or :-J ”

~ is just a tilde symbol. But then again…
