Can Bingo be this addictive?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) November 8th, 2010

The news spread really fast. “She lost her car and house to bingo”. How can this be? How can a person be that addicted to playing bingo? Sure, it’s gambling, but it’s not like gambling in LasVegas. Or, maybe it is, just on a smaller scale. Question: Do you have a friend or family member that is addicted to bingo, to the point of losing everything?

Not that I know of, but if I find out they are then I will pat them on the back and tell them that I admire them. lol

I don’t know anyone who’s addicted to Bingo. But I can see how it would be appealing.

Not only is it gambling, but you say it’s on a smaller scale than gambling in Las Vegas. That’s true, but think about it: Someone who goes to Bingo regularly likely has friends who also go regularly; I can imagine that the social aspect is just as important as the possibility of winning money. Maybe the addicted are addicted to this as well as gambling?

Well this question really hit home. I love love love me some Bingo. I know it can become an addiction if I were to let it. Fortunately, I know when to slow down and quit for a while. But when I go back I see the same people there as when I stopped going so I assume they go everyday. Also, I’ve never known anyone to lose everything to bingo, there is not that much money to be won IMO to warrant losing all your possessions just to play bingo.

I really never thought of the social aspect of bingo. i guess people have friends in all events of life. like, friends at a tavern, for example. people go to taverns to be with people that like to go to taverns and people that play bingo, go to be with friends at bingo. i cannot imagine how this woman lost her car and house, by playing bingo. she must have had a huge addiction to not only bingo, but other vices in her life that we were not aware of.

@john65pennington – I can’t imagine how she would have lost her car and house, either. But I guess people do all kinds of things to excess.

Did she really lose the car and house “to bingo”, or did she stop working and paying for those things and have them repossessed / foreclosed? I can’t see “losing everything to bingo” unless one didn’t have much to begin with.

The gossip was just that. i think, instead of paying her bills, she used the money to play bingo and got caught up in whirlwind of bills she could not pay. the car went first, so she either caught the bus or hitch hiked with a friend to bingo.

Apparently it can be.
