What was the highest mountain that ever existed on Earth?

Asked by Brian1946 (32537points) November 11th, 2010

I heard on either the Discovery or the History channel that there used to be a peak over 30,000 feet high in the Hudson Highlands of what is now New York state (IIRC), but I haven’t seen or heard anything about this from any other source.

The tallest mountain on earth measuring from the center of the Earth is Mt. Chimborazo, in Equador. Measuring from base to peak, Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the tallest mountain on Earth. The highest from sea level is Mt. Everest. I haven’t heard of the peak you mention.

Oddly enough the Appalachians were the highest mountain range on the earth about 500 million years ago. This range was higher than the Himalayas today and this would tie in with what you heard on the History Channel.

that is probably true. i saw at the denver museum of natural history that before these rockies, there were previous ones….and 30,000 feet isn’t much higher than everest, so it sounds quite plausible. isn’t that effing crazy though. a chain of mountains DIED…and crumbled…and now there are new ones. my mind cannot even wrap around that thought.
