What do you think life would be like in the western hemisphere (North and South America) if it had never been invaded by the European colonial powers?

Asked by Brian1946 (32592points) November 11th, 2010

What would it be like here if the Native American nations had been able to flourish and progress without European interference?

Would they have eventually set up their own immigration agencies to deal with legal and illegal immigrants?

You mean if the Europeans had not come here at all and brought disease and alcohol?

It might be a very interesting place.

I do have a slight cavil with your premise. The term “native” Americans is not accurate. They were simply an earlier migration over the Asian land bridge.

The first group of immigrants would still be fighting and killing each other for dominance. Just like they were 518 years ago.

The U.S./Canadian Native Americans would have been, more than likely, wiped out by an expanding Aztec/Mayan force, if the area wasn’t invaded by Asian colonial powers.

There wasn’t very much reason for plains Native Americans to “develop” as a culture, as they were essentially living a completely sustainable life in a land abundant with resources suited to their need. It’s only when you are building cities and reproducing exponentially with the support of technology that we get conquering powers, really. So I really think it was just a matter of time..and one of the civilizations on one of the three major landmasses was going to make its way to the plains eventually.

Also, life there would whoa suck because i would never have been born.

The civilized tribes that greeted the invaders would have become dominate and spread completely across from shore to shore, peacefully.

Sadly, I believe that things would have ended up pretty much as they did. If the Europeans did not do it, someone eventually would have. The resource rich nature of this continent and overpopulation of the rest of the world would have insured invasion.

Native Americans did not have a reason for developing military technology because they never overpopulated this continent, which is, in my opinion, one of the main reasons for serious conflict. Even if they had reached that point and developed equivalent military technology, they would still have been screwed:

Nothing would have prevented the plagues any invasion would have brought. In my enjoyment of thinking of alternate history, I like to theorize about what would have happened had the Native Americans been resistant to disease.

Yes, I think they would have lost due to aforementioned resource rich continent and greedy invaders, however, they would have taken an even greater chunk out of the invaders. Even with the plagues and lesser military technology, they kicked butt.

@Arisztid

Thanks Aris.
Good to see you again. :-)

What do you think would have happened if nobody invaded the western hemisphere, after the first Americans arrived over the Bering land bridge?

@Brian1946 You too. :) I am back at my old haunt, rarely here.

I think that, eventually, population would have increased and, most likely, the Aztecs/Mayan force would have taken over the upper part of the continent, like @iamthemob said.
