I am not familiar with VLC.
I use mediamonkey for all file conversions and audio file management. Media monkey will convert nearly any file format to any other file format. I save my CD files as FLACs. I then convert those flacs to mp3s for use on my player while keeping the original flac. There is an option when you convert to replace the original file. Good for when you convert wavs to flacs.
Mediamonkey also converts flacs directly to CDs for compilations. It’s a very helpful audio file management application.
Personally, I use SoundConverter to do tasks like these, but VLC should indeed be up to the job.
Open up the FLAC file with VLC, select File->Wizard, Transcode/Save to file, Next, select the existing playlist item, Next, Transcode Audio, select MP3, Next, RAW, save it somewhere, Finish.
What operating system are you using? If you just google “convert FLAC to MP3”, you’ll get tons of resources for freeware apps that’ll do the job.
If you’re on a Mac, swing by MacUpdate or VersionTracker.
P.S. FLAC is annoying. It’s ahead of it’s time right now. I say give media a few more years before it’s ready for this kind of stuff.
I’ve heard great things about MediaCoder and SUPER. If you just want to convert a few songs, VLC will do the trick, but if ur serious about media conversion, then get a dedicated one.
