Do you like the beach?
When I tell people that I don’t like the beach, they look at me like I have ten heads. Am I the only one who doesn’t like the beach?
It doesn’t seem relaxing to me, as everyone else says. Everyone wants to live next to the ocean, but I don’t see the appeal.
People tell me I’m genuinely crazy for not liking the beach! Then I genuinely feel crazy.

I don’t like the beach either! (High-five!)
Part of it has to do with my insecurity in a bathing suit. But, for the most part, I just don’t see the appeal.
I like to swim, but I can do that at my parents’ cottage. I’m not big on sunbathing (being pale means I burn, and it doesn’t even fade to a nice tan). And if I wanted to hang out by the water, I don’t want to do it with a million other people around. If there’s a relaxing aspect to beachgoing, I can’t see it happening when the place is packed with people and kids being noisy!
I’m no beach fan either. Quiet ones are nice to stroll on, but as a destination for swimming, sunbathing etc., no thanks.
Sand is, of course, one of nature’s most hateful substances.
I grew up near Jones Beach so I enjoy it – occasionally. I think it is a combination of memories, the health effects of the exercise, Vitamin D, and escape for day-to-day life.
On the other hand I can think of melanoma, and that particular incident where she and I were engaging in a private activity and a nughty bit inadvertently touched the sand.
Sea salt, sand, and sex do not a romantic combination make! I still cringe when I think about it.
I love the beach and the more people who don’t like the beach the better for me!!
@meiosis I was interrupted by work, (flutherus interruptus, dammit!) and now I cringe at the spelling errors that will be saved for posterity.
(unless a kind mod fixes them and deletes this – for/from naughty)
I love the beach and hope to have a studio on the outer banks someday :)
I like to be near the sea, and I don’t mind wasting an hour or two on the beach but longer than that would drive me crazy with boredom.
I know several people (my father included) who absolutely loathe the beach – particularly the sand, sun, and people. Even though I live in California, the first time I went to the beach was a couple years ago. It was vacant (save a fisherman and a few joggers) which was just lovely. The sound of the waves calms me and I always go home with plenty of photos. It’s pretty much the only time when I feel like whipping out my camera.
I don’t live terribly close to the beach. It’s at least a thirty minute drive no matter how you slice it (longer if you take streets, and even longer if you bus hop – which I have been known to do.) I’m not a “beach person” in the typical California sense. I can’t swim (and, therefore, do not surf), hate the sun, and don’t care for large groups of people. But if I’m at the beach with good company, the weather is perfect, and I have my camera… that’s my definition of a good outing.
I’m long overdo for a day in Santa Monica.
I love the beach.
I grew up on an island, spending every day that I could by the ocean. I thinks there’s just something otherworldly about it, and it enthralls and fascinates me to this day.
I’m sorry that you’re not a fan. Is there any particular reason that you don’t find the beach relaxing? Have you ever spent a sunset watching the sun sink into the water, listen to the waves lap rhythmically against the sand? Have you ever witnessed a storm offshore, churning placid water into writhing monsters?
I think it is fine that you don’t like the beach. More unencumbered beachfront for me.
I love being next to the ocean.
I love beach combing.
It calms me down. It makes me feel peaceful.
Yeah, course I do. Not nearly as much as my dog does however. She absolutely adores it :¬)
Oh I love the beach. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks is soooooo very calming.
I love the beach. When you can walk into the water and swim for as far as you want to and as hard as you can, than walk up and lie in the warm sun, not to mention the scantily clad others (going PC generic). What’s not to like?
I’m not a beach fan, its nice to look at the beach every so often. But if I went a whole year without seeing one it definitely wouldn’t be the end of the world. I also don’t plan on living near the ocean.
I like the beach, as long as there is sufficient shade to keep from burning. My wife is quite fair skinned, and won’t go to the beach between the hours of 11 and 4.
I absolutely love the beach. It is my goal to eventually live near one. I am at my best and most calmest when near or at a beach.
I love the beach, and I wish I lived near the ocean, rather than on the flat boring plains of Alberta. I love to swim, and it’s one thing I do extremely well, but I don’t like going to public pools all the time, especially when the weather is nice in the summer. Going to a nearby beach or lake would be much nicer. I also love the smell of the ocean, though many people would tell me that’s weird. Lol.
I love the sea but I can take or leave the beach. Walking the dogs or riding a horse on the beach is amazing though.
Somebody’s crazy!! OK, is there anyone here who doesn’t like a beautiful sunset??????
@Dutchess_III Are you a sadist.? Responding to this question on today of all days.:)
Heh @Adirondackwannabe I was just thinking the same thing as me and my Durango were battling snow drifts so I could get a cinnamon roll for breakfast! O, warm weather and the beach….although, seeins how I’m in Kansas I’ll just have to settle for warm weather…someday.
@Dutchess_III That was kind of nice to think of the beach today. I could at least smile at the memories.
Man…I spent a few of my early years living in Saint Pete, Florida before we moved to Kansas when I was 8. My dad moved to Amelia Island several years ago upon retiring. The Pacific was in their back yard. Then Dad died, so I went back to Florida for the first time since I was a kid. Stepped off that plane…and man. The smell of the air, the feel of the humidity…I was eight years old again. It was like I had never left. Rick came up after me. He’d never been to the beach. We were sitting on a blanket kind of watching the tide come in. Rick thought it was cool how the water came up a little higher and little higher..inches at a time after every wave. At one point, when it was within about 5 feet of us I said, “We need to move back now….”
Rick said, “Nah! Not yet! We’re plenty far away.”
I said, “But you don’t know…” and WHAM!! Big wave broke all over us! ‘Bout took our six pack out to sea!
Rick said, “How’d you know???”
I honestly don’t know how I knew, I just knew. Buried experiences I guess.
And then he saw a dolphin leap. That country-born Kansan yelled “BIG fish!! BIG BIG fish!!!” I laughed!
Then, after dark, a gaggle of boys came along, scurrying around with a flashlight. I went up to the car for something, and when I got back Rick was GONE! I looked around…and there he was, in this huddle of boys, looking for all the world like a little boy himself They were looking at something and explaining something to Rick.
I said, “Rick?”
He looks up with this this amazed and awed grin on his face and he yells “CRABS!!!!” They were catching crabs! And then they were off, scurrying after more crabs, Rick right in there with them!
I do like the beach but not when its high tide because I just have a fear.Probably because of all the dreams I have of being caught in a tsunami or riptide.
