When you hear song lyrics how often do you know what they mean, I am still not sure I know what Fergie is talking about with a "London Bridge"?

Asked by sleepdoc (4700points) November 12th, 2010

So as I was driving into work this morning I was listening to a station which does a request jam on Fridays. One of the song’s in there was Fergie’s London Bridge. I started thinking about how many times I have heard that song and figured that the phrase was a euphamism. But today I was asking myself what does it really mean? Did some of you jellies know what this means without having to do an internet search? Even after having attempted to do some internet searches I am still not sure I know. How many of you have a story like this about music you can share?

Lyrics are very much an afterthought for me. Vocals are just another instrument in the song as I am drawn to the melody, beat and tempo first and foremost.

But now that you can search and find lyrics to a song I am more often disappointed to find what they were actually singing as opposed to what I thought I was hearing!!

I don’t know the song. I’m cursed with hearing lyrics and I look around thinking, “Are you people listening to what this jerk just said? Apparently not!”

London Bridge was downed by fire. When someone makes your “London Bridge fall down”, they are making you very hot… thus why the song starts with fire sirens.

I do not understand any of Lil Wayne’s music. I love the song Bleeding Love, but don’t really know the meaning.

@Trillian I once heard a standup comedian say, “You can say anything if you want if you’ve got a nice beat.”

As for lyrics on the whole, I often have no idea what meaning the author intended, just what they mean to me. But it seems as if great art can mean many different things to many different people, so I’m fine with that.

I remember singing a long to all kinds of classic rock songs when I was a kid. I had no clue what the lyrics meant or what the artists were talking about, I just liked the song. Aerosmith’s “Janie’s Got a Gun” was one of the first songs I knew all the words to. Seriously, I had no idea what it was about.
Even now, I still get a lot of lyrics wrong. I THINK I know what they mean, or even what they’re saying, but clearly, I do not. For the longest time I thought the line in England Dan & John Ford Coley’s “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” went, “I’m not talking about the linen, and I don’t want to change your mind.” Just within the last year or two did my mom correct me. She heard me singing it out loud and then asked, “What did you say?” We had.. ahem… have a good laugh about that.

I don’t have to google it. It’s a sexual reference to bending over at the waist and taking it from the rear while performing oral sex on another male. You know what “superman that ho” means? I know that one too. The students in my classes are all too happy to share the meaning of these euphemisms if they think I shouldn’t be singing them. LOL

@noelleptc Are you sure? I thought an Eiffel Tower was similar to a Holland Tunnel and a Bay Bridge? LMAO
I probably have the wrong act with the wrong name. Blame it on old age!

@noelleptc No darlin…I’m admitting I may be wrong about it and confusing all these places of interest. LOL After awhile all the tunnels and bridges start to sound alike! LOL
