Picking up from the story here. Amazing, what a life changer that’s going to turn out to be. So yeah, what are the chances that in your home lurks a goldmine in waiting? Something gathering dust in a loft maybe?

Maybe. I have a little “genie” lamp/teapot looking item that my grandmother gave me that received it from her grandmother. It’s gold with some little etchings on it. I’ve wondered if it was worth anything and have been tempted to go see when the “Antiques on the Road” people have been in my town, but honestly, I’m afraid to find out. If it were worth anything, I would then be torn between keeping it as a rememberance to my grandmother or cashing it in for much needed cash.
Not anything close to that vase, but there are a few items lurking around that have value. One is an opal ring that Frank Lloyd Wright had commissioned for one of his wives. The opal is the size of Texas, it barely fits on my pinkie finger and weighs so much that I’d have to put my arm in a sling in order to hold it up. I bought it on eBay for $1700. The appraisal came out to $5000, primarily because of the gold. Throw in its history, and it might go for a bit more.
My only hope is a couple of boxes full of Marvel comics from the 1980s. X-Men, mostly.
I doubt it. Like @chyna , I have a family heirloom or two that might be worth some money. The few I know the value of wouldn’t amount to anything like a fortune, so the temptation to part with them isn’t very big compared to their sentimental value. I have a complete demitasse set that my great great grandmother brought with her to the US from England, but there are no maker’s marks on the set so looking up the value is almost impossible. I’d have to take it somewhere to be appraised, but it doesn’t seem worth the trouble of unpacking it and finding a reputable appraiser.
However, my mother-in-law has stated her intention of passing down to me her good silver. She has spent the past several years collecting a complete service for 12. The silver pattern originally belonged to either her mother or grandmother, I can’t remember which. She had it appraised many years ago, before adding to the collection, and it was quite valuable then. Whenever I inherit it, I will have it appraised for insurance purposes. I would have to be very desperate to sell it, but it would contribute quite nicely to a new car or a down payment on a house. ;)
If we pulled out everything from our basement, attic, and garage that got turned into a storage room we could probably be millionaires. But my mom is to lazy to do it and I just don’t care for having that kind of money. My house has been around since the mid 1800’s and it’s been in the family all this time. So it has some old things that are worth a lot just laying around.
@daytonamisticrip You have no idea how much I want to come over to your house and help you sort through it all. There’s nothing that makes me hum more than a treasure hunt.
Go for it. Come try to sort it all out. It’ll take you about 500 years so you might be dead before you sort through it all.
