Do you feel like you waste time on the internet? If so why?

Asked by losanjealous (44points) November 13th, 2010

I notice that I can easily surf the web and hours go by and I have not gone outside, showered….Have you experienced it? For me it is probably boredom, maybe loneliness that keeps me online.

Yes this happens to me. Sometimes it is boredom or loneliness, but more often than not it’s procrastination. That’s what it is right now, for instance. Damn the groceries!

Yes.I am the biggest procrastinator on the planet.
It’s what we do. ;)

I’m in my seasonal slow work zone so it’s easy to get stuck online for more hours than I’d prefer.

I am usually most active online ( usually here, lol ) early mornings and evenings.

If the sun is shining I am always out and about doing whatever during the bulk of the day.

I know, isn’t it GREAT! If it weren’t for the internet I would probably be clinically depressed. I do artwork, surf, play on here, do artwork, sometimes get around to showering on the weekends, go to work during the week, come home, do artwork, cook, play on the internet and watch tv, and then sleep somewhere amongst all that. Internet has also stepped up my artwork quality. When I need a photo for something…bingo…right there at my fingertips. But I don’t do digital. I am still one of those purists drawing at the drafting table with ink and colored pencils and what not.
Gawd I lurve the internet!

Yes, I find that the internet is a popular way to fritter away life. ;)

For the money we spend on military endeavors, we could easily put a computer in the households of every third world terrorist that would otherwise be out looking for ways to blow us up. Let’s get em’ high speed connections too so they become addicted to porn and social networking forums like this. That way, they can spend their time complaining about America all they want, but never really have the gumption to actually get off their fat lazy terrorist asses and do anything about it.

I spend quite a lot of time on the Internet but I never feel that it is wasted, though perhaps it is. I feel less guilty about reading books. People don’t consider reading a waste of time.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies

Are you putting together your box of donations this morning? lol

TexasDude's avatar

Sometimes, yes, because I’m usually not actually producing or accomplishing anything while I’m online.

Not really. I view spending time on the Internet as leisure time that I deserve when I’ve done enough work. Plus, most of the time I spend online is devoted to learning – listening to podcasts, browsing Fluther, reading about topics that interest me but are irrelevant to my work – so I’m usually still relatively productive when I’m on the Internet.

I will go online to work on a website, or sort through pictures, answer important emails, etc… Two hours go by and I have read Google news at least three times (in case something changed) Looked at the weather radar. Checked craigslist for neat items that I cant live without. Check ebay to see if those craigslist items are worth anything. Play some slots on Pogo. Update Facebook accounts for me, my dog, and my non-profit. Finally, my six dogs get tired of watching me sit there doing nothing and bug me to death to get up and do something with them. I accomplished zero of my original tasks that I set out to do. Yes. I waste my time on the internet.

It depends on what time of year it is for me…summer time I am usually outdoors scuba diving, amusement parks, road trips, etc with my daughter. This time of year I’m pretty much just working and not doing much after that so yes I do spend quite a bit of time on the internet. I usually watch the TV shows that I like online as well as movies. I don’t feel guilty about being on line because I take care of what needs to be done first and winter time is perfect for lazy day weekends.

Way too much time online for me. I’m looking at 6 projects right now that I should do and would even like to do. Instead, here I am…and enjoying every bit of it.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Very good idea!!

Tamara's avatar

Sometimes I do feel like it is a waste of time but not very often because I always do my important tasks first and then I start surfing the net when I don’t have anything else better to do.

Bluefreedom's avatar

Yes and no. Sometimes I do something seriously productive on the Internet (i.e. – Fluther) and other times I waste time online (i.e. – watching YouTube videos, for instance).

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

Sometimes. Like when I should be in bed instead of playing on the computer past midnight, or when I should be changing the oil in my car or getting my house ready for winter. But because these “need-to-do chores” are boring, I sometimes think instead “It’s not really a total waste of time since I’m enjoying myself and life’s too short anyhow.” Lol.

The_Invisible_Man's avatar

Sometimes I do, only because of the talents which I posses. I feel like I should be writing and working on my Manga. Writing more poetry. Drawing more. It all involves money, which is something I don’t have because I’m jobless. I still live with my parents. I have no money to get a license. No jobs available in this area. So I’m pretty much dead. The internet is my savior, and it keeps me entertained. Helps me from getting majorly depressed. The internet, is indeed, helping me. hahaha. I know I’m pathetic. I have no life.

not anymore… I’m mostly bored with the internet…

You can’t waste time. You only do what you choose to do because it is the best available option you have at the time. Unless you’re a masochist and you choose to do things you don’t like, and that will never give you a pay back.

Calling something a time waster is kind of a way to get others to give you a break for not being productive all the time. Productive, that is, according to social standards. Social standards can go fuck themselves, as far as I’m concerned. As long as you aren’t hurting someone, you should do what you think is good for you to do.

In the US, we have this workaholic culture that says you must work all the time. Well, a lot of us have discovered we like playing, and that we can live just fine playing a lot and working a little. As long as you don’t hurt anyone, and as long as you aren’t placing a burden on anyone else, you aren’t wasting time at all.

I waste a lot of time online but I try not to do so when I have things that I really need to be getting on with.
