How many servings of vegetables do I get from my Dagwood sandwiches?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) November 13th, 2010

I love to make a Dagwood sandwich for lunch. I typically pile on thin layers of cold cuts and cheese interspersed with various fixings such as pickles, tomato slices, diced onion, and a hearty lettuce leaves such as green or red leaf varieties. I use whole wheat or multigrain bread with stone ground mustard and light mayonnaise or a spread such as Heart Smart™ as condiments. If we have any experts in nutrition here, how close does my sandwich get me to a serving of vegetables if I am counting daily servings of fresh fruits and vegies? Is it one serving, less, more?

Of course, if anyone has suggestions on how to kick my sandwich up a notch, I am open to trying them, so long as the sandwich remains sufficiently compact that I can stretch my mouth open big enough to bite through it.

About one fourth.

Goddamnit, I’m really hungry now. Thanks ETpro.

I think it depends on the actual volume of veggies you are eating.

According to this chick, a single “serving” of leafy vegetables (broccoli is the example she uses) is about the size of a lightbulb.

A good rule of thumb is ½ cup = 1 serving. Except for lettuce 1 cup = 1 serving.

You’re probably putting 1 – ½ servings on that sandwich. Depending on what you’re putting on, that sandwich is probably 1,500 calories…

You should probably make one using strict portion sizes so you get an idea of what you’re actually putting into your creations…

@BarnacleBill Thanks. I’d guess I would come close to filling a cup with vegetables. So one serving is probably about right.
