How do you feel about grocery shopping?
I typically go grocery shopping on Sunday afternoon. It always feels like such a chore, even though I try to buy different foods and I’m always really happy to have a refrigerator full of produce and meat.
Do you enjoy grocery shopping? Am I alone in finding it hard to go spend 40 minutes or so a week buying food for the future? Why is this?

My grocery store is my second home. I have no issues shopping as long as I have some idea of what I want and don’t stand in one spot wishing I knew what I wanted for dinner.
I fucking hate grocery shopping. It takes so long, and I’m sick and tired of being accosted and denied passage by people who think that the aisles are a place of congregation. I hate that old people think they’re wiser than me just because they’re older and think that I should bow to them, and I hate that they sneer at me when they see the look of disapproval on my face.
I hate the young people who look at my legs and make off with stupid comments as they carry away their made for weaklings four percent beer.
I hate having to wait in line, and I hate people who’ve not brought enough dough and take items away, I hate picky fucks who argue quality, deals or prices with the poor cashier, and I hate the cashier who has a grade six equivalent of mathematics. I hate the mats that don’t stop moving and jumbles all your shit together with the stuff of the person ahead of you. I hate not finding what I want, and have to either settle for something I’ve not intended upon, or have to make a quick stop at some corner store that charges thrice what anything is worth.
I hate how it’s all freezing cold in some parts, or smells like ass in others.
I’m a busy bitch and I’ve no time for such foolishness.
I do like the toy hearse car I found by the cereal section two years ago though. It gives me strength and hope whenever I go grocery shopping. And it works.
One old man I met was awesome, we had a big conversation about health, cereal and prices. He was so sweet. There’s also all sorts of cute little kids running around and bumping into you.
I’m not entirely hopeless, no. I just take it too seriously.
I hate shopping. I only go if I need toilet paper or peanut butter.
Gah…I have to go shopping tomorrow.
Sooo, so, repetitious, like dust. lol
I like grocery shopping as long as I don’t find myself doing it all the time. I’ve always enjoyed most forms of shopping, from clothing to electronics to groceries.
Eh. I shop like a Euro. I hit each type of food-monger 2x a week in their turn: cheese, butcher’s, vegetable and fruit, bakery, fish. There’s Trader Joe’s for the other stuff, like frozen food and so on.
But when I just can’t be bothered, I’ll use Fresh Direct and it gets delivered.
Aw come on, @Symbeline. Don’t hold back. Why don’t you tell us what you really think?
I enjoy food, so the quality of the ingredients matters a lot. I poke around and see what they’ve got and what new things I might try. I do it every Sunday for the family, but if I didn’t have to do it, I don’t think I would choose to do it. It leaves no days to take a trip or anything, unless I want to figure out how to get along without food for a few days.
@wundayatta You’re speaking to someone who ate shit off the street and would do it again if need be. I don’t really care about stuff like that. I’m probbaly gonna die of cancer some day anyways, no matter what I do. All my words there in that first post are real.
I love food shopping! There’s something about spending Sunday afternoons in the grocery store and getting home and prepping the foods I bought (washing and cutting veggies), organizing the fridge/freezer, and cooking for the rest of the evening. Can’t wait to have someone else to do this for/with.
I like to cook, I like to eat. Restaurants are rarely in my budget these days. I eat a healthy diet, with plenty of grains, fresh fruit and vegetables.
So grocery shopping is a favorite pastime for me.
On the weekend I go early in the morning to avoid the lines and buy non-perishables or semi-perishables (juice, eggs, cheese, fruit, vegetables).
I buy meat and fish on the way home from work and cook it within a day or two.
@Symbeline That was supposed to be a joke pretending that you didn’t say what you really feel. I was commenting on the fact that you didn’t hold back at all. I guess it didn’t go over so well.
My words were about me and had nothing to do with your comment.
@wundayatta Oh. I’m sorry then, I didn’t get it at first. No harm done right? I told you I take it way too seriously lol.
I hate it when I have to go to the same store over and over again. The only time I really like going into a grocery store is when I have a really fun meal planned.
I never loved grocery shopping, but it used to be that every so often, maybe once a month or so, I would take a lot of time to shop, see what is new, and I kind of enjoyed that. Now, I am so flipping annoyed every time I go to the grocery store. Living in Memphis has been a torture. There must be 40 items I used to regularly buy that I either cannot get at all, or have to drive to the other side of town 30 minutes away to buy, and even then I can only get a few. My parents come to town two or three times a year and I get to go to the Navy base, and finally buy a bunch of my brands that I want. When I go to Nashville, NY, or FL I being stuff home. I have never been so frustrated about grocery shopping.
What I hate the most about grocery shopping, is bringing all the bags into the house, and putting it all away. I feel the same about laundry and the dishwasher. I hate putting it all away when everything is clean.
@JLeslie I love the feeling of knowing that all my clothes and sheets are clean! It’s kind of annoying to have to put it all away, but all I have to do is put in the Lark Rise to Candleford (my new favorite show :) ) DVD and watch an episode while folding. Then it’s all right. :)
@ChocolateReigns Folding is fine. It is the putting away. I used to fold for a living, I am fantastic at making a perfect fold, everything looks all nice and neat. I also like vaccuuming, the lines in the carpet, feels clean. It is just the putting away. I don’t like to put my papers in a file either. I am consistent I guess. I do like when everything is put away though. It’s weird.
I only go if I am in the mood to goof off….or starving!
I LOVE grocery shopping! Maybe because most of my actual meals are eaten at on-campus eateries, and I don’t cook. I like looking for new products, and I like buying fruit (which you can’t do on my campus). I love having a fully stocked fridge/shelf in my dorm room when I get back, so the next time I want to snack I have several different things to choose from.
My husband does most of our shopping, but if I want something that is not on the list, I have to do it myself.
You need to go to a doctor and get yourself a script of Ritalin, it makes shopping fun.
My partner does the weekly shop because he has the car, and his schedule means he’s available mainly when I’m not. I sometimes call in mid-week to buy extra bits, especially if I’ve had an idea for a particular meal for dinner. That, I don’t mind. The weekly shop, meh. I don’t like that.
I don’t mind grocery shopping. I use a smaller grocery, and go early on Saturday or Sunday morning, when there are no crowds. I know the people that work there by name, and they’re pretty helpful. I mostly buy the same thing every trip, which makes it easier.
I’m finding that using my own shopping bags makes it much easier. I can fit into 3 -4 bags what would take 20 plastic bags. It makes getting the stuff from the car to the house much easier.
Every now and then, I try a new grocery to see if the selection is different, but I really hate driving out of my way to do grocery shopping when my neighborhood one has a pretty nice selection.
For the last 6 years I had to do a big shop when I was in town every couple of weeks. It was a serious pain, loading all the food into coolers, icing them down, trying to get the fruit and veg in so that nothing would get squashed, separate cooler for raw meats. I really didn’t like it. Now I can go anytime I want. The usual routine now is to go to the market Sunday morning, wander around and pick out fruit and veg. Then most days I will make a quick trip to the butcher or fish shop and supermarket to pick up anything that I want for that day. It’s not my most favorite thing to do, but it’s not too bad. I always ride my scooter so I can’t buy too much. Although there have been times when I looked like I belonged in Seoul because I have the scooter stacked up with all sorts of bags and boxes.
Grocery shopping is better than any other shopping. I <3 food.
I don’t love it, because it’s mostly just ‘a chore’ and ‘time money that I’d rather not spend’ but somehow I seem to have gotten to a point in my life where I don’t hate, loathe, fear or despise much of anything that I occasionally ‘need’ to do, such as shoveling snow from the driveway, going to the dentist, doing (and paying) taxes, getting up from a warm bed on a cold, drizzly Monday morning to go to work… or shopping. It’s something that I have to do, so I try to plan the trip for the best (i.e., ‘least inconvenient’) time, get it done, get home and put things away so that I can get on with anything else that I’d rather do.
I know that I’ll feel better when I have finished the chore, and I look forward to that (and to having a houseful of food again), and I try to anticipate a few moments that I’ll really enjoy in the store: the sight of all that wonderful fresh produce arrayed for purchase, the smells at the deli counter and bakery (even if I won’t stop at those places), the sight of all the meat that I could buy if I wanted to, the colors in all of the aisles, and the few people I might talk to—intelligently—about anything under the Sun, and beautiful people everywhere, if you just look out for them.
For some reason when I check out, even though all I’m looking for is the shortest and quickest-moving line, if it’s a girl or a woman doing the check-out, it’s always the best-looking one in the store. And when I tell her that sincerely, her smile in reward is proof that I was right.
Men hate to shave everyday and women hate to grocery shop.
This is just the norm for everyday life.
I look at it this way, i am thankful i live in a country that has plenty of food and plenty of shaving cream !!!
@rooeytoo
’ Although there are times I looked like I belonged in Seoul because I have the scooter stacked up with bags and boxes.’
Hahaha, yeah, those scooters in asia, I have seen entire families with dogs and mattresses on one scooter. Its an art form for sure! lol
I love it if my partner is with me.
@Simone_De_Beauvoir When I was married I wouldn’t allow my husband to go with me. He piled the buggy up with every junk food item he passed by. Of course, that may have been his plan… annoy me at the store and he wouldn’t have to go anymore.
I don’t enjoy it mainly because money is so tight for me that I worry about spending too much. I spend ages checking to see what the cheapest option is and have to avoid things that I want rather than need because it’s most likely a waste of money. This makes shopping a major chore for me.
I try to go once a month and do a major food shop and then have top ups every couple of weeks.
@Coloma – sometimes I have mine loaded to the point that it is hard to steer because the rear end is so heavy and the front end wants to lift, I have to sit as far forward as I can. It must be dangerous but as you said, in some countries the whole family plus the dogs ride. By the way, my 2 smaller dogs do love to ride. They sit between my feet and peep around the front, looks funny! I should have one of your geese to ride on it, that would really make people stop and gawk!
I absolutely love grocery shopping. I love to cook and come up with my own recipes. I’m always planning out menus for the week in my head so when I go shopping, I know exactly what I need, but I also get new ideas for the next week’s menu. I love Xmas and Thanksgiving because I get to go through all of my old recipes, look up new ones on line and go shopping to Trader Joe’s and other great stores (mostly checking out the produce). I always end up in lovely conversations with folks (usually senior citizens) at the grocery store.
