Is the vet's office the easiest way for your dog to contract kennel cough?

Asked by Aster (20028points) November 15th, 2010

How safe is it in the vet’s waiting room and examining room? Are the rooms riddled with kennel cough? That’s where you’d take your dog if it had kennel cough, right? Of course it is. So are our dogs safe there?

Only one dog of mine has ever had kennel cough, once, and it came from the kennel. All of my vets (I’ve lived in a number of places) have been so aware of the problems that they are very careful. If an affected dog is in the waiting room at the same time and sniffing with yours, your dog might get infected, but as a rule I think the vet’s office is probably OK. That’s all just from personal experiance.

The first time I took my dog to the vet she was interacting with another dog in the waiting room. I started talking to the owner who said she was there because her dog had kennel cough. When I went in to see the vet she said my dog now had to have the shot since she intereacted with another dog that had it. I now just keep her up to date on the shot because you never know when she will be in contact with another dog at the dog park, kennel or vet that will have it.

It’s a lot more common at dog shows, doggie daycares and the like where you have many dogs in one spot. Whenever one of my dogs has gotten it, it’s been from a dog show.
