Wouldn't backing up over Wi-Fi be painfully slow?

Asked by bluemukaki (4332points) April 4th, 2008

I have never understood the appeal of wireless backup and wireless syncing (I’m looking at you Zune). How do you use Time Capsule if you add a couple of big files?

I just got a Time Capsule and it took two full days to backup all of my data (~500GB) over Wi-Fi.

Now that the full backup is done, it only needs to sync files that have changed since the last backup, which is quite a bit faster.

I really like using wireless backup for my MacBook Air, since I don’t have to keep plugging and unplugging an external hard drive.

Depends on the wi-fi connection. In case you didn’t know, your files aren’t traveling through the internet, just through your wireless connection, so it won’t be that slow. Still, it can’t really compare with a usb or firewire connection. In my opinion, like fortune425 states, the appeal is in that there is no fussing over cables and their clutter. Its also great for mobile devices that already have wi-fi and aren’t used for much data storage anyway, like a phone.

it is very slow. it can take hours to sync a 40gb apple tv. the technology is still young. it will improve.

a benefit of wireless back ups are out of sight, out of mind. not being concerned with backing up is a convience worth paying for.
