How many calories do you need to lose weight?

Asked by Rayvin14 (351points) November 16th, 2010

I am wondering if it is bad to have not alot of calories if you are eating enough food. I eat healthy, and I am not hungry when I’m done eating. But by the end of the day I barely am making 1000 calories. Is this bad? Will I be able to lose weight, or will my body think it’s starving?

The trick is to use up more than you take in. The actual number of calories doesn’t really tell you the whole story.

It is unwise to drop below 1500 or so as your body will be comprimised as to it’s nutritional requirements.

It is a myth that being overweight means you can starve and be provided for.

The body needs certain requirements DAILY, regardless of weight.

1000 calories per day is inadequate and potentially dangerous longterm.

You should strive for at least 10 grams of protein per meal and plenty of fresh veggies and fruit along with adequate calcium intake.

Learn your foods nutritional values and eat accordingly.

I think you just need to increase your activity level. 1000 calories is already very little so going any further below that could cause adverse effects. The body could think it isn’t’t getting enough food, so it doesn’t burn as many calories even though you are eating less.

Coloma is absolutely right, you need more than 1000 a day. Make sure you also take a daily vitamin to compensate for some of the nutritional requirements. Also ensure you are getting enough water to make your pee not yellow.

Try to burn 300–500 extra calories a day also. after a week of 500 extra calories burned, you will lose a pound from exercise (3500 calories = lb)

Don’t restrict calories, BURN them. Don’t try to lose weight, work at becoming more physically fit. Get a medical check-up and then get expert exercise help by joining a gym.

The number is 3500. You need to achieve a deficit of 3500 calories in order to lose one pound of body fat. This can be done in a few ways. The general recommendation is between 1200 and 1800 calories consumed (lots of factors go into this, but generally if you are a smaller person you will eat fewer, and if you are a woman you eat fewer). That way you still get enough nutrition to survive (don’t forget a daily multivitamin), but over a week should lose in the area of one pound. You should also exercise. Every calorie burned exercising is one closer to 3500, or one more you can eat, depending on how you look at it. Eating a little more over the day, make sure it’s all healthy, natural, filling stuff, and exercise will be your best bet.

Good luck :D

For a woman to maintain her weight she needs 11 calories per pound per day. Eating less than that will result in weight loss. Exercise will add calories to your budget. Men get 13.
Metabolism may slow if you starve yourself by eating 1000 calories of potato chips, but if you frequently eat high volume, low calorie foods your body will mot shut down and stop burning calories.
Men get 13 calories per pound.

Wait a minute – aren’t you the young lady who does powerlifting? Or weightlifting of some kind? You’re definitely not getting enough calories if that’s you.

1000 calories is way, way too few, even for weight loss. You need to eat at least 1,200 a day (probably more – 1,200 is the bare minimum) in order to prevent your body from going into starvation mode and killing your metabolism.

There are various calculators online which will let you plug in your age, height and weight, and calculate the number of calories you should be eating. Try these:

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm
http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/calories-goal.php
http://www.health-calc.com/diet/energy-expenditure-advanced

They will probably give you different numbers, but use those to get an estimate. Don’t starve yourself! It is entirely counterproductive to weight loss, and is extremely bad for you in the long run.

If you go less than 1200 it should be on a medically supervised program. I lost 80 lbs on a very low calorie program and because what I was eating had such a higher nutritional content than the crap I HAD been eating, I instantly felt better. I was monitored weekly by a doctor, who, if I had shown any sign of problems would have modified my calorie intake in an instant.

Well see, I’m definately not starving myself, i’m eating enough, but the things I am eating are very low calorie. Its all high in nutrients, and protien and what not.
