What are the titles of some TV shows where the star or one of the regular cast members, had the same name or surname as their character?

Asked by Brian1946 (32638points) November 17th, 2010

E.g., In “Seinfeld”, Jerry Seinfeld’s character is named Jerry.

Was this done so that they wouldn’t forget their names? ;-)

Ellen DeGeneres, Ellen & The Ellen Show

Roseanne Barr, Roseanne

I read something that I can’t find now of course about Ellen being written with a different character name but everybody on set kept calling her Ellen, so it was easier to change the character.

Bill Engvall as Bill Pearson on The Bill Engvall Show (I think the downfall was that it was named the Bill Engvall Show, but the character’s name was then changed…)

Kardamom's avatar

@papayalily I adore Bill Engvall in his stand up comedy routines. The network show just wasn’t funny enough and wasn’t really enough like “him.” I’ve watched and re-watched all of his Blue Collar Comedy shows. He’s just so funny, without being mean or disgusting. Now, here’s your sign!

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Kardamom I agree, it wasn’t funny. Which was sad, because both he and the woman who played his wife (whose name I’m forgetting) are both so funny and were given really crap material. But she’s funnier when she’s allowed to go insane and get wound up instead of playing the maternal straight man.

Shirley Jones IS Shirley Partridge in The Partridge Family.

@filmfann You are so right about Shirley! I loved her in the Music Man too, although I can’t recall what her character’s name was in that. Ha ha.
