Has anyone here used a 1920x1080 laptop resolution (on a 15-inch or smaller)?

Asked by DominicX (28808points) November 17th, 2010

I may be getting a laptop with a 15.6” display and 1920×1080 resolution. I’ve been hearing some things about how large this resolution is and how it makes things hard to read on the screen. I’m just asking if anyone has had any personal experience with this large resolution and if they find they need to zoom in on things and increase font sizes. I’d really rather not have to do that, so that is why I may consider a different laptop with a different resolution.

What I really need to do is see this resolution in person, but I have no idea how. I don’t know anyone with a laptop with this resolution and all the sample laptops at electronics stores always come with the default low-resolution screens.

Any help is appreciated.

That would be the maximum supported resolution and probably one that you would use for a larger external monitor. You will be able to adjust it down.. in fact I’ll be surprised if it comes set at that resolution. It will probably be something closer to 1440X900.

No, trust me, it comes with 1920×1080. You pay an extra $130 for that (it’s also a different type of screen). The only other option is 1366×768, which would be a downgrade from what I currently have, so that’s out the question. My dilemma is if I want to get the 14-inch Dell XPS (with 1366×768) or the 15-inch (with 1920×1080).

My only issue with getting the 15-inch is the size of the resolution. I don’t want to have to be squinting to read things on the screen.

Omg, it’s so small. l have to enlarge EVERYTHING. Of course, my friend has a 15 inch with 1366×768 and she finds that too big and wants it to look like mine. So the question really is, do you find things to need some enlarging already? Have you ever bought a book in the smaller, mass-media version, and then gone back and purchased a different version with larger text? If not, you’ll probably be fine.

No trust me I work with computers in desktop support. A laptop with 15.6” monitor is not going to ship with a 1920 X 1080 resolution. I have a 27” monitor on my desktop and I’m running a 1900 X 1200… that wouldn’t be possible on the smaller screen.

Even if it does exist (which i highly doubt) you wont HAVE TO use that resolution you will be able to adjust down.

Please do share with me the link to this product I’d like to check it out

@mrlaconic Well then how come my 15.5 computer has 1980×1080 as I’m typing this?

DominicX's avatar

@mrlaconic

No, trust me. Seriously, trust me. I’m not making this shit up. Here’s the link:

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dndogx4&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&model_id=xps-15

Look at the second option highlighted in green: “Silver Anodized Aluminum 15.6” FHD (1080p) B+RGLED Display with Facial Recognition [Add $130.00]”. It comes with 1920×1080.

I know you can lower the resolution, but why pay extra for it if I’m not going to use it. I only want to get the laptop with 1920×1080 if I’m really going to use it. That’s why I asked this question, to find out if I’m really going to like it.

@papayalily

All I’ve used so far is 1440×900. My MacBook has it and so did my old Dell. I like it, but it’s not an option for this new Dell and I am willing to try a larger resolution.

mrlaconic's avatar

Alright I stand corrected and I apologize that is very new because I haven’t heard of laptop monitors of that size going to that small of a resolution before.

@mrlaconic

Even more insane is the Sony VAIO Z (what I originally was going to get before the new Dell came out). It’s a 13.1” screen with 1920×1080. That’s nuts.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Still, you dont HAVE to us 1920×1080 you could always turn it down as mrlaconic said.

DominicX's avatar

Yeah, but down to what? 1366×768? Is there something in between that and 1920×1080?

Essentially what I’m saying is that the only reason I would want the 15-inch over the 14-inch is for the high resolution. But I’m not sure if that high resolution is such a good thing. I really wish I could see an example of it…

El_Cadejo's avatar

@DominicX ahh i got what your saying. I dont know, but I would assume there would be something in between. Why dont you give dell a call and ask?

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@DominicX Don’t assume. See my question yesterday.

and for the people wanting a dell xps 15 with 1920×1080 resolution, it’s GONE!!!

joedizzy's avatar

also it’s not too high of a resolution, back in the 90’s i was using 1600×1200 resolution on a ibm crt monitor, was quite nice actually. Had my font size set to 10, same as what i use on my 1280×800 screen on this laptop.

DominicX's avatar

Huh. Wow. I totally got the laptop and it totally gave me headaches and then overheated and I returned it and got a full refund. Now I’m just waiting for CES to see what other laptop I should get instead. Sorry, but 1920×1080 is just too much for me.

joedizzy's avatar

I enjoy high resolutions just for the fact i can fit more stuff on the desktop and see it all without it overlapping or minimizing windows all the time.

there was a ibm thinkpad with a higher resolution then 1920×1080… and it was a 14 or 15 inch laptop. I was looking for it and stumbled upon this thread.

@DominicX I really think you’d enjoy a 17 inch laptop with 1920×1080 resolution. it’s amazing for video games, but anything smaller (laptop screen size) is a strain.
i’d love the sony z with 1920×1080 res on a 13”, I wear glasses and can see small stuff really well with them. d=)

anyways, hope i helped with the comments.

joedizzy's avatar

I found an old ibm thinkpad t60 on craigslist, has a 14” screen with a resolution at 1400×1050 for $300
you can get one from amazon.com for $250. it also has a core 2 duo cpu @ 1.6ghz, 2gb of ram, 120gb hdd, 128mb discrete ati gpu.

I couldn’t get a 17-inch because it’s just too big. 15 or smaller. I need this laptop to be able to fit in my backpack so I can take notes in college lectures. My current laptop is 15 inches and it works fine. I just hate how 16:9 is becoming standard, so for the most part your choices for a 15-inch are 1366×768 (too little) and 1920×1080 (too much). I wish 1600×900 was more common…

joedizzy's avatar

@DominicX the Sony VGN-FW200 has a 16” screen at 1600×900 resolution.
there’s a couple sony 16–16.5” laptops that have 1600×900. i’d recommend one that has a discrete gpu.. for games, photoshop, gfx editing, etc…

Hi,
I have a 3 year old Dell XPS M1530 that has a max resolution of 1920×1200. I have used it at the max resolution for the whole time and don’t have any problems reading on the screen. I’m also a software developer so I often will crank the font size to 8 point to maximize the code on the screen without problems.
When I was shopping for this laptop 3 years ago, I saw laptops with a 1920×1080 resolution in Best Buy and Staples. If they don’t have a 15” laptop, try looking to see if they have a smaller laptop at this resolution.
I’m looking for a new laptop because the video card has overheated for the last time and I won’t get anything that has less than a 1920×1080 resolution.
Good Luck,
-Alexei
