Is getting a Pixie haircut a good idea?

Asked by Marchofthefox (787points) November 18th, 2010

I really was considering a Pixie haircut but I’m not sure.
Will my hair grow back correctly? My hair is to my shoulders.
I saw Emma Watson’s haircut and I just fell in love with the idea.

I think a pixie cut is adorable if you have a cute face. You will be able to grow out your hair, but the downside is that it will take a long time to grow out the layers if you decide you don’t like it. You might want to ask some trusted RL friends if they think it will be a good style for you.

Yeah, that type of cut’s success depends pretty heavily on (1) the shape of your face, (2) the shape of your head, (3) the length of your neck, and (4) the quality/nature of your hair. It’s kind of one of those things that is clearly a good idea or bad idea for some people, but for the majority it’s like. “Well, that will be a good idea if it ends up being a good idea.”

You have to try and see.

You said it all.

Before you decide to copy a style that looks best on someone else, first find out what style looks best on you. The best hairstyle for YOU is the best measurement of a great hairstyle.

@dkranzberg Which was what I was saying.

Yes and no. It’s sooooo cute, but it’s also a lot of upkeep – you have to get your hair cut every couple of weeks or so in order to keep it that short, or it stops being a pixie haircut and starts being something else (perhaps a less cute something else). I stopped having pixie haircut because I just didn’t have the money to get my haircut that often.

Oh, it is adorable! But I know I can’t carry it off. It takes a certain face and, I think, personality. Try one of those free sites where you can upload your photo and “try on” different hair styles.

It will grow out. There may be some awkward stages, but it will grow out. I recently tried a style I had always wanted, but really knew wasn’t right for me. I just decided I needed to get it out of my system. It sucked. :) I am growing it out.

And just because…

Celebs who do it well: Halle Barry, Winona Ryder, Gennifer Goodwin, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Lee Curtis.

Celebs who do not carry it off well, IMO: Hilary Swank, Liv Tyler, Nicole Kidman, Selma Blair.

Honestly I hate the look.

In addition to what the others have said, should you decide to go through with it, just know that it is a really weird sensation to go from long to exceptionally short hair…particularly when sleeping or washing your hair. I did it a year ago, and after adjusting, haven’t looked back. It was liberating.

@Supacase Winona Ryder had the right look in “Girl, interrupted” I really dig the look of it on her.

I think I can pull it off I have a long face and neck but I need to work out, a little.

I guess it depends on how much you look like Emma Watson.

I love pixie cuts! I could never pull one off because I have a tiny head. As others have said, it really depends on stuff. I suggest using photoshop, or even Paint (or even scissors and glue) to simulate the haircut on your image, and see if it works. Definitely get opinions from many friends and family members who will tell the truth.

If you do it, stock up on great earrings and headbands!
