What is the best way to get rid of the smell of smoke?

Asked by zannajune (1159points) November 19th, 2010

My husband and I have started using our wood burning stove in our apartment now that it’s getting cold. But when I came home today I realized how much it makes our apartment smell. It is so strong. I opened the sliding door to help it air out, but I think it’s going to take more than that.

Also, once I do get rid of the smell how can we keep using our fireplace without it smelling bad all the time? Or should we just stop using it?

Put white vinegar in a spray bottle and walk around the room, spraying it in the air. Works like a charm for dissipating heavy odors.

Vanilla candles and boil cinnamon sticks and cloves on the stove.

@zannajune what kind of wood are you burning? There are some woods that produce nice smelling smoke and some that are just nasty. Also when was the last time the stove and chimney pipe were cleaned? Clean pipes and working dampers will help draw the smoke and the smell out of the house instead of blowing it back inside.

Try burning one of these cleaning logs it may help.

If you’re smelling smoke in the dwelling, then there’s too much smoke not going up the flue. That’s dangerous. You need to have all of the smoke going up the flue, and if that’s not happening then you shouldn’t be using the fireplace / wood stove.

I heat with wood and it is cold where we live. Very little smoke comes into the house. Occasionally I will get a puff if I open the door quickly or open the door with the bypass closed. Make sure your chimney is clean and the open.
I also have a whole house electrostatic air filter that circulates the air and runs at the rate of 10 full air transfers per hour. Our air is clean.

I’m with @CyanoticWasp .

You need to get that stove looked at, and then buy a carbon monoxide alarm.

Vodka and water in a spray bottle helps deodorize fabrics and carpet. Try that. Saw it on the Ellen show.
