Vegetarians and vegans: Do you have any remedies for accidental meat consumption?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) November 19th, 2010

My boyfriend and I went to a restaurant tonight just a few hours ago. I ordered a veggie burger and he ordered a hamburger. I ate the veggie burger it was delicious and then felt kinda funny in the stomach area. At first, I thought it was just because I ate it very fast. However, this was an hour ago and now I’m still feeling kinda funny and I had a lovely little diarrhea issue in the restaurant bathroom. I suspect that the cook may have accidentally cooked my burger in the same oil that he cooked my boyfriend’s hamburger in.

So, I’m just wondering, are there any remedies to settle a tummy that is unused to meat once some meat has been accidentally ingested?

pepto bismol, settles and coats the stomach, stops diarrhea. or liquid lotrimin, same deal.

I bet he grilled them next to each other.

I would suggest drinking lots of water to help flush your system.

Do you have any remedies for accidental meat consumption?

Physical or psychological?

I just drink some water and get over it. Unless I’m somehow allergic to meat or it will impact my health terribly, there’s really nothing to be that concerned about.

It could be food poisoning unrelated to the oil the burger was cooked in or even to the burger itself. Almost everywhere that has veggie burgers cooks them on the same grill as the meat burgers, so if you’ve eaten them before without a problem it’s probably not the oil.

I’ve been a vegetarian for over 25 years and I can’t say that I’ve had any stomach issues related to the unwitting ingestion of an animal product.

@xxii: Are you a vegetarian or a vegan? I’m guessing not by your answer. For someone who hasn’t eaten red meat in a long time around ten years for me it is extremely painful. Humans are not born with the ability to digest meat, it’s something we have to develop gradually. I lack the enzymes to properly digest meat and, as such, if I ingest any red meat at all, it becomes quite painful for me as my body has trouble digesting it.

@crisw: I was talking specifically about red meat. I’ve ingested poultry and fish before with no problems. Also, many places don’t actually grill the veggies burgers in the same oil as the hamburgers. I’m glad you have no troubles when you accidentally consume meat but I do.

@AmWiser and @zenvelo: Thank you for your answers. I feel better this morning but in the future, I guess it’s just something I’ll have to ride out.

I’m with @FutureMemory on this one – remedies?

KatawaGrey's avatar

@seazen: Like I said, when I ingest red meat, I get some pretty nasty digestive reactions. It wasn’t too bad last night in comparison to what it has been in the past but it was still very painful and uncomfortable severe stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Mostly I’m just wondering if there’s a difference between your basic remedies for nasty indigestion and accidental red meat consumption for someone hasn’t eaten red meat in a long time.

I’d also go with pepto bismol. too.

@seazen I was suggesting that it could be ‘damaging’ to one’s psyche as well as one’s stomach.

Not vegan or vegetarian, and I’m passing on something gained through intuition, not research, but here goes. Common “meat tenderizers” (which make meat tender by starting to digest it before it’s cooked) are made from papain. Papain is the digestive enzyme that occurs naturally in unripe papaya. Perhaps if you don’t make the right enzymes for digesting meat, eating this could help do it for you. They also make papain supplements for general digestive health. What I don’t know is how many you’d have to eat in order to clean up the meat problem, but it would seem like a good idea to keep some with you for accidents.

Ugh, it’s awful when that happens – it’s effectively something you just have to work out, either with the pink stuff (not ideal) or painfully (not ideal…) Lots of water as was mentioned and certain foods like potatoes can help keep your body quickly processing what’s already in your stomach so it doesn’t sit around as long digesting. I wish I had a better answer for you.

@JeanPaulSartre: What surprises me is I’m usually able to detect it as soon as it enters my mouth. I was just so hungry that I devoured it like the garbage disposal I am. Thank you for your answer, though, it really better than nothing. I think I will also try @laureth‘s suggestion which I also greatly appreciate. :)

I could do without people thinking I’m making the whole thing up.

I agree with @crisw about it most likely bad oil or something in your burger that was bad. @JeanPaulSartre and @laureth‘s suggestions for the stomach upset are good. I’ve been a vegetarian for about 18 years. I know what it’s like to accidently ingest certain meats ..but most of my food illnesses have come from other issues with non-meat foods.
