Has anyone clearly figured out why our legs fall asleep on the toilet?

Just running through a few lingering questions in my head, seeing if there ever was an answer to this…

It takes courage and strength to take a great dump. And so, even the strongest shall do battle with all their might pon’ the seat o’ the Porcelain God.

Well, i must admit this has never happened to me. is this normal? my wife, the nurse, tells me that this is not normal.

You need a cushiony toilet seat. And how long are you sitting there?

chyna's avatar

Mine never has. I’m in and out without much delay.

My legs have never fallen asleep while seated on the toilet…but, I have! Could the legs asleep be due to hands/arms leaning on the legs? This is something I have no experience with.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

How long are you in there?Maybe they’re bored ;)

Coloma's avatar

I have never experienced this, what are you doing for so long that your legs fall asleep, reading War & Peace? lol

Plucky's avatar

You must sit on there for quite some time then ..lol.
The reason? Because, if you’re sitting there for a long time (and/or are heavy), your circulation is getting cut off or reduced substancially from the edges of the toilet seat. Some seats are more prone to do this than others ..like ones with more defined edges.

This has never happened to me either…

Yes, if your legs are falling asleep on the toilet you are not only spending entirely too much time there, but entirely too much time in the same exact position. That’s not good. If you need to sit on the toilet for so long move around some; if you have to be there for that long you need to have a little toilet dance or something; something to keep the blood flowing to your extremities, among other places.

Yes, maybe someone needs to hold onto a remote with an ‘eject’ button, launch you before the gangrene sets in.

When this occurs do you feel ‘flushed’ too? lol

No, no, I’m with the OP here. If I sit any longer than a few minutes, my legs start to fall asleep. This is one reason I don’t dawdle and why I’ve never understood the whole ‘leisurely reading on the toilet’ thing. I have known people that spent ages in there reading and surfing the web on their laptops (hahaha).

I always assumed it was due to physics relating to sitting, the toilet seat, and pressure on blood vessels going to the lower legs. I have pretty muscular legs and almost no fat in that particular area, so I just assumed the seat was pressing directly on my veins or an artery.

@MissAnthrope

Really? Surfing the web on their laptops?
I have never taken my laptop to the toilet with me.
Wonders never cease. hahaha

It must be your choice of reading material! Ditch the boring rags and in this day and age you should be able to have a laptop or WiFi cell phone and Fluther while….well whatever it is you are doing in there…

Weeeeeeeell, getting back to the question. If I had to logically deduct a reason why I would say it is because the hard seat places a lot of pressure on your main artery cutting blood flow. I don’t know what toilet you have or how well you fit it but I would try a padded toilet seat or getting something to place your feet on as to change the angle of your thighs on the seat or maybe taking some of the pressure off them. Just a thought.

mrentropy's avatar

It’s probably because you’re applying pressure on the nerves in your leg for too long. Not so much a blood thing. Try not to spend too much time in one position, or get a cushioned sit. Better, don’t spend too much time on the bowl. I used to hear that was a bad thing but now I don’t remember why.

Do your feet reach the floor? If you are short and your feet are just dangling, that could be the problem. Maybe you should use a toilet like they have in Korea, it is a hole in the ground and you squat above it. Theoretically it facilitates the bodily function you are there for in the first place. I bet your legs wouldn’t go to sleep in that position. Of course you may need help to get out of the position!

gailcalled's avatar

News to me also.

Try eating more fiber and bran.

@rooeytoo

Try performing a few steps of Riverdance.

Let your shit flow, like a mountain stream

lillycoyote's avatar

@MissA I’ve never had this problem. I was just trying to come up with something! My feet fall asleep all the time, usually when I’m at the computer sitting in the same position for a long time or when I’m watching T.V. or something; but it’s never happened while I’ve been on the toilet. Normally I would suggest getting up and moving around every once in a while but that advice didn’t seem to fit in this particular case.

perspicacious's avatar

No experience with that.

I would like to see the hot links tab bar for the questions on all other area pages, particularly the activity page. It would be nice not having to jump around to find that bar

chyna's avatar

@Cruiser Are you answering the right question here?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

Cruiser's avatar
