Have you had any success selling your books online?

Asked by Mamradpivo (9665points) November 21st, 2010

I’m moving to Europe this spring and working on slimming down my possessions. I have a lot of books. I mean, a lot of books. At some point, someone should have sat me down and explained the library system. But in any event, I’d like to see them go to a good home. When I moved to Oregon 4 years ago, I took several boxes of books to a used book store and they gave me maybe $20 for many hundreds of dollars worth of reading.

So I’d like to figure out the best way to sell some books. I have a wide variety of pop-biology, pop physics and NY Times best-seller types, as well as several years worth of books from my Booker Prize finalist book club.

Have you tried to sell books online through Amazon or AbeBooks? Or anywhere else? Also, if you happen to be in Oregon and want a good deal on some books, hit me up.

I’ve sold some books on Amazon. I found that it was most worth it with school books that someone else might need to buy for a course.

I’ve been selling through Amazon. I sold two books really quickly but they were school related books (not textbooks though). The regular reading novels and books I have listed aren’t moving. And they’re all listed at the lowest prices so I don’t know what’s up!

Have you tried craigslist or ebay?

Hey @kendallthevtog I haven’t tried anything yet. I just recently came to the conclusion that I’m probably not going to sell everything in bulk, so I’m a little late in the game. I’ev never sold anything on eBay, but I suppose I’m willing to try.

Absolutely. My dad runs a business selling used books online on Amazon. The trick is whether your books are worth anything?

I think it’s going to be harder to unload books with the advent of book readers and google putting books online. You could donate them to the library and take the tax write-off.

I would imagine the hard part would be inventorying all the books, and assignging conditions.

I have sold a few on Amazon, but I can’t sell them at bottom price and still pay for shipping, so they’re not very competitive. I’d be afraid it would take many months and a lot of trips to the post office to unload a significant number of books that way.

In your place I’d either take the hit at a used book store just to move them out or simply give them away to a library, hospital, halfway house, or school. Sometimes I have just carted a boxfull out to the curb and put a big “FREE” sign on them. Once I took advantage of a sell & swap day at work and sold books by the inch. I got rid of many that way, at 50 cents per inch.

I still have thousands at home, including one whole room jammed full.

Assuring them of a good home might be a self-indulgence you can’t afford. Best to sort out your priorities here.

You can use half.com which nowadays has been become a part of eBay, but without selling fees, and auction system.

Selling on amazon
is another great option to make out money from your used book. Amazon is well known retail eCommerce which come from selling books in the very beginning.

And there are another great portal called etsy.com, basically these site are for handmade items, but books are also categorized there as handmate.
