What would be an appropriate gift for a 7 year old classmate?

My daughter is invited to a birthday party this Saturday for one of her classmates. The young girl will be turning 7.
We just moved to this town, so we don’t know the family very well. We are also very low on money right now, and to be honest, I’d like to avoid shopping tonight (night before Thanksgiving) and Friday (ugh).
Would it be ok to put a little money in a card? How much money would be appropriate if we did this?

My best friend’s 7 year old girl loves stuffed animals. Every store we go in, my friend has to buy her at least one. Could you find one for under 10.00?
I think money would be okay too, maybe 10.00.
You wouldn’t actually have to go shopping for a stuffed animal either. Most Go Marts, 7–11’s etc. have them.
I’ve done that before and used a 5 dollar bill and the child loved it.
I think a gift card would be a little better than straight cash. Ten bucks at a local toy store or somethin’.
Yeah, how about a gift card? They have them almost everywhere these days. Having worked at a bookstore for a million years (okay, six), I can tell you that kids love having their “own” money (and especially their own card – I think it feels like a grown-up credit card for them) to choose whatever book they want.
I think a $10 gift card from a bookstore is an awesome idea.
I have noticed many gift cards at the dollar store. I could easily slip in and out of there real quick and avoid the holiday shoppers at the other stores. Good idea. Hopefully they have something she would like.
Thanks everyone. Now I don’t feel too bad if I need to slip or 5 or 10 in a card at the last minute if we don’t have luck elsewhere. :)
The littlest pet shop toys are great, but appearently, there are some weird shaped bracelets called crazy bands that are cheap and it’s very popular amongst the girls.
They have this little stuffed animal toy that is a hampster in a little carrying case. Although the money would be nice (eventually) I think little kids would rather have something that can be opened and played with right then. Big Lots has these cute little sets of kid makeup, scented body sprays and bubble baths in candy scents. Also, Big Lots has some very cute hair accessories for really cheap: you could get a few head bands and some hair ties and scrunchies. I also got my neice a “purse” from Big Lots. Actually it was a little overnight bag for toiletries, but it was hot pink glitter vinyl and I put some emory boards and a little hand mirror and some fruit flavored lip balm inside of it. They also have some really cute things in the dollar bin at Target like pretty knit caps and stickers and Disney notepads and pens etc.
$5 -$10 in a card is good. If it’s a party where the whole class is invited, then what you give is of less importance. You could hit the drugstore and buy colored paper and glitter glue; that’s a big hit with my nieces’ that age. So was a potholder loom, which was an impulse buy to keep them busy one afternoon. They LOVED it. Barbie now has lots of new rugs.
Still time,I think $10 bucks will still buys a chameleon at Walmart. Nice thing about it is that its fits nicely in an envelope and will walk out with the same color as the envelope.
Just kidding, of course, I think a gift card is definitely the way to go, unless you can get your hands on the latest crazed item, it did wonders at my holiday party. I just don’t know what that happens to be this year for 7 year olds.
