Do I install Ubuntu or Wubi?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) November 25th, 2010

I’m trying my hand at Linux for the first time tonight. Do I install regular Ubuntu on this page or Wubi on this page – I’m currently running Windows 7.

Either will work; they each have their pro’s and con’s.

Wubi installs Ubuntu from within Windows. This makes installation really easy, and if you decide you don’t like it, you can remove the entire OS just by uninstalling Wubi. However, you get limited space for the partition and some random things don’t work (sleep mode, I think). But other than that, you’re getting the full operating system with Wubi.

If you download Ubuntu straight from their site, you’ll have to burn a live CD. Once you’ve done this though, you can test out Ubuntu by running it straight off the live CD. This won’t make any changes to your PC or install anything. The live CD is the complete OS, but it runs a little slow. If you decide you like it, you can install it from there. If not, all you have to do is pop the CD out of the tray.

@Ivan Thanks, that clears it up!

Careful! If you install Ubuntu from the live CD, you need to be aware of partitions. From windows 7 go to Disk Management in the start menu, just type it in and it will pop up once searched. Right click the Volume/Partition that says (C:) which is your C drive in windows, and click Shrink Volume. Shrink it so there is at least 10 gigabytes of free space created.

Now you are safe to install Ubuntu from the live CD. It should detect that you have Windows installed, but with free space on the harddrive, and put it self “Side-by-Side” in that free space.

Have fun, and I’d recommend Linux Mint over standard Ubuntu. Linux Mint is built off ubuntu, with lots of user-friendly tweaks and added convenience software that saves you lots of time and debugging if you are completely new to linux.
