Need AT&T to run an iPad?

Asked by nmguy (528points) November 27th, 2010

I admit to being technologically naive, but I’d like to know whether iPads run only on AT&T.

I was thinking about asking Santa to bring me one this year.

You only need AT&T if you want to run it on the 3G network. The WiFi option doesn’t require an AT&T plan – but you will only be able to access internet when you are within range of an open wireless network.

If you want to be able to use the internet anywhere (nominally anywhere, at least), then you have to get an AT&T plan.

Verizon also sells iPads, but you need an additional mifi device to use it without wireless.

AT&T is the exclusive provider for phone/internet service for Apple Ipads and Iphones. (This is due to a trade agreement between apple and at&t) You can still do a lot of things without these services, but if you want connection to the internet that doen’t rely on wireless networks, you need AT&T.

I have internet through our cable provider, and use an Apple Airport wireless hub (5 years old). Three people were over this weekend with iPads and all of them were able to access the internet by using our password. No phone connection required.

I am surprised that only @ratboy got this one right, though @iamthemob came close.

However, it should be pointed out that the Verizon deal involves a wifi-only iPad and uses the Mifi for actual internet access. The Verizon iPad does not use 3G the way the AT&T ones do; the mifi allows nearby wifi devices to access the 3G network.

Of course, @BarnacleBill points out another way to do it. I already have wifi at home and much of Seattle is covered, so I could access the ‘net on my old iPod Touch in most places. If you life in a similar situation (ie, in a big city) then you should have no real problems with a wifi-only iPad.
