How can I maintain my body and energy in a more physically demanding job (details)?

Asked by Blackberry (34189points) November 28th, 2010

I picked up a second job for the holidays temporarily: Retail. This is my first time doing it (my first day was black Friday, in women’s shoes…...) and it’s pretty challenging physically since I’m not used to running back and forth fetching shoes for 8 hours.

It’s exciting (for now), but I now know I need more comfortable dress shoes. What else can I do to make this easier on my legs and body?

I am sure you have to dress a certain way, but do so comfortably, don’t sacrifice comfort for fashion.

If you want to look good and not feel tired, you can try the 3–5 cm wedge heel.

This is what I would do:

Keep track of your posture as you get more tired (it actually helps keep all the muscles working more efficiently, but feels so much easier to let go of.)

Work more walking into the rest of your day, so your body adapts to it quicker. (If you don’t already, park farther away from your destination—when it’s light out—, walk up and down escaltors rather than standing and waiting, stand when you have the option between standing and sitting.)

Bring light, small, but energy-boosting snacks for when you start to fade. (Like an applesauce cup, or a small handful of nuts, or a not-full-of-extras energy bar)

And keep having fun! That makes everything easier : )

I worked retail for many years. You will most likely get used to standing on your feet in a few weeks. Comfy shoes and socks should help. Stand on carpet whenever possible. If by any chance you get pedicures or exfoliate your feet, stop doing it. Let the calluses build up. Dancers pray for calluses. It is natures way of toughening your feet.

Try to get a good night sleep, every night. That’s where most of your energy comes from. Also, do sit-ups to strengthen your inner core/abdominal muscles——you need a strong core to support you as you move about, bend over, get up, etc.

Oh, and standing still is more difficult on your body than walking, so don’t stand still for a long time.
