What happens when a customer online claims they have not received merchandise?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) November 29th, 2010

I have sent a book out over TWO months ago. Today I received an email stating they have never received the book and demand credit. I searched the tracking code and the U.S. Post office says it was delivered to them a week later when I sent it.

What happens now? My Track and Confirmation number says it was delivered…but they claim not to have it. It’s also fishy they contact me TWO MONTHS later about not receiving it.

I’m afraid I’ll have to pay them $75….but this is proof that I did send it out right? This is really upsetting.

Did you send the package to an apartment building or a house? It is entirely possible that one of you got a little mixed up about the exact address.

The track and delivery confirmation doesn’t show the address but the city and state. I don’t know if there is a way to see the address…hmm. I really don’t want to pay them $75!!

How was it paid? Paypal, for example, has procedures for addressing cases like this.

It depends some on the details of the sale. You could try contacting the company you used to ship it to see if they can confirm with you where it was delivered exactly.

I’d pay them the money. They’ll give you a bad review as an Amazon seller which will hurt future sales.

It’s not like I sell all the time. I wouldn’t pay that money because I didn’t do anything wrong.

Well, it’s certainly possible they didn’t get the package. All you have is the city and state. I’ve had packages that were supposedly delivered to my house before and they either never arrived or were stolen.

You may not have done anything wrong, but neither did they. They didn’t get the package, and therefore the transaction wasn’t complete. Look at it from their point of view.

And it may be that they waited two months because they thought the package may be delayed. Or they realized one day, “Hey, I didn’t get my package.”

I wouldn’t assume they’re lying.

But whatever, do what you want. You asked our opinion and I’m giving mine.

Did you insure it or send it so that they had to sign for it?

Send them the tracking number so they can see why you believe it was delivered. Did they have an opportunity to purchase insurance, but decline?
