Has anyone who's read the leaked diplomatic documents noticed how utterly juvenile America's diplomatic community is?

Asked by Kraigmo (9421points) December 1st, 2010

I was plowing through the leaked documents that were spread to the masses by Wikileaks. They only contained “secret” and “confidential” files, nothing classified above that. No umbrasecret and no cosmic files.

I was sort of stunned by just how juvenile America’s diplomats and spies are when it comes to analyzing foreign peoples. All they do is borrow the typical stereotypes that everyone’s heard of. Their description of Iran sounds like a a simplistic overanalytical hillbilly describing his local liquor store owner.

I’ll cut and paste a secret document that analyzed Iranians/Persians and their “mentality”:
¶3. PERHAPS THE SINGLE DOMINANT ASPECT OF THE PERSIAN PSYCHE IS AN OVERRIDING EGOISM. ITS ANTECEDENTS LIE IN THE LONG IRANIAN HISTORY OF INSTABILITY AND INSECURITY WHICH PUT A PREMIUM ON SELF-PRESERVATION. THE PRACTICAL EFFECT OF IT IS AN ALMOST TOTAL PERSIAN PREOCCUPATION WITH SELF AND LEAVES LITTLE ROOM FOR UNDERSTANDING POINTS OF VIEW OTHER THAN ONE’S OWN. THUS, FOR EXAMPLE, IT IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO AN IRANIAN THAT U.S. IMMIGRATION LAW MAY PROHIBIT ISSUING HIM A TOURIST VISA WHEN HE HAS DETERMINED THAT HE WANTS TO LIVE IN CALIFORNIA. SIMILARLY, THE IRANIAN CENTRAL BANK SEES NO INCONSISTENCY IN CLAIMING FORCE MAJEURE TO AVOID PENALTIES FOR LATE PAYMENT OF INTEREST DUE ON OUTSTANDING LOANS WHILE THE GOVERNMENT OF WHICH IT IS A PART IS DENYING THE VAILIDITY OF THE VERY GROUNDS UPON WHICH THE CLAIM IS MADE WHEN CONFRONTED BY SIMILAR CLAIMS FROM FOREIGN FIRMS FORCEDTO CEASE OPERATIONS DURING THE IRANIAN REVOLUTION.¶4. THE REVERSE OF THIS PARTICULAR SYCHOLOGICAL COIN, AND HAVING THE SAME HISTORICAL ROOTS AS PERSIAN EGOISM, IS A PERVASIVE UNEASE ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE WORLD IN WHICH ONE LIVES. THE PERSIAN EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN THAT NOTHING IS PERMANENT AND IT IS COMMONLY PERCEIVED THAT HOSTILE FORCES ABOUND. IN SUCH AN ENVIRONMENT EACH INDIVIDUAL MUST BE CONSTANTLY ALERT FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO PROTECT HIMSELF AGAINST THE MALEVOLENT FORCES THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE HIS UNDOING. HE IS OBVIOUSLY JUSTIFIED IN USING ALMOST ANY MEANS AVAILABLE TO EXPLOIT SUCH PORTUNITIES. THIS APPROACH UNDERLIES THE SOCALLED “BAZAAR MENTALITY” SO COMMON AMONG PERSIANS, A MIND-SET THAT OFTEN IGNORES LONGER TERM INTERESTS IN FAVOR OF IMMEDIATELY OBTAINABLE ADVANTAGES AND COUNTENANCES PRACTICES THAT ARE REGARDED AS UNETHICAL BY OTHER NORMS. AN EXAMPLE IS THE SEEMINGLY SHORTSIGHTED AND HARASSING TACTICS EMPLOYED BY THE PGOI IN ITS NEGOTIATIONS WITH GTE. ¶5. COUPLED WITH THESE PSYCHOLOGICAL LIMITATIONS IS A GENERAL INCOMPREHENSION OF CASUALITY.

How convenient or ironic it is, that the diplomat who wrote that seemed to not even know about the CIA overthrowing the elected prime minister of Iran in 1957, Mohammed Mossadeq, in Operation Ajax. Mentioning this might explain some of the “shifty” behavior Iranians have towards America, but little facts like that just apparently get in the way.

Other more recent documents get even crazier, with Hillary Clinton ordering secret DNA samples and iris scans of politicians in South America and Europe.

After reading this stuff, do you have much faith in the intelligence of some members of our diplomatic community? How is it that such trite, racist, hyper-generalized writings can be official secret government documents?

All direct links to these documents have been brought down by hackers and/or the U.S. government. The only place to get them now is the file sharing community: http://torrentz.com/cbf89a4c8c05f7d2b568120b94d2aab1080f2f7f
Nothing I’ve seen so far in these files involve secrets that would affect life or limb due to the leak.

I didn’t need WikiLeaks documents to reveal that aspect of our diplomatic community and is why I get so mad when I have to pay my taxes every April.

What would be fun is to read what foreign diplomats are saying about our boys and girls overseas! :)

Europe seems to have lost any means of communication so our idiots just follow your idiots.
It hurts man, it hurts.

I was surprised that State Department policy allows for that kind of juvenile remarks in official communiques.

I am pretty sick right now, and I had a hard time understanding the entire document, but for perspective, you might want to read this book. http://www.amazon.com/Princess-Story-Behind-Saudi-Arabia/dp/0967673747 I know it’s not about Iran, but in some ways the events described inside also seem to fit the document you mentioned. When I’m trying to learn about something, I try to look at it from every angle.

I dunno. That cable in your post is obviously beyond stupid, but a lot of the ones I read were pretty mature and insightful.
