What kind of drill bit should I use?
I need to drill a ¼” X 2 “hole in a rock (granite, think) and was wondering what type of bit to use.

You will want to you a masonry bit. Depending on the hardness of the rock, you may need to use a hammer drill to drill into the rock.
And make sure to wear eye protection!
Does it need to be cooled as it’s being drilled?
Here’s some info – looks like the answer is “maybe.”
A $6.00 carbide bit from home depot should do the trick. I would tap a start point with a nail to prevent drifting of the bit. Just let the bit do the work with firm steady pressure and don’t over heat the tip. 2” is pretty deep and I would go a ¼”-½” at a time to avoid burning up the bit! Hammer drills help but you are only doing one hole so a regular drill should work just use the slower speed versus all out high RPMS.
@Cruiser – Do I get to curse you if I fail?
@lucillelucillelucille You curse me every time we play golf and I win so I am used to it!
Will the hole need a perfect hole edge?? If so look into starting the hole with a glass cutting drill bit, they will give you the best edge and tape down duct tape and drill through that for as perfect an edge as you can get. Remember slow and easy! ;)
A drill bit attached to a very studly handyman. lol ;-)
My harem is just about complete, minus the stable boy. haha
@Cruiser- Yes,the hole has to be perfect.
You are dreaming about the golf game.Wake up and cry! XD

@lucillelucillelucille This is a very cool how to by a “maven” no less!! Here is another how to. Good luck! This second link cautioned this…
“Use a variable speed drill set on a speed of 100 to 200 rpm. NEVER USE A HAMMER DRILL ON ANY NATURAL STONE, GLASS OR PORCELAIN MATERIAL.”
Success! The evil spirits have now left my MIL’s head! Thanks for your answers everyone :)
A high quality masonry bit. Do not get a cheap one. They can (and usually do) break. It can injure you. Always get a high quality tool.
