Would you rob a bank if you knew you would get away with it?

Asked by JustJessica (4054points) December 2nd, 2010

Times are hard.
Let’s just say for whatever reason the opportunity arose and you could rob the bank and not get caught. Would you do it? Would you tell anyone you did it? What would you do with the money? Would you feel bad?

Do you know what? No I wouldn’t! I like to earn my money, what I buy or invest that money on is as a result of hard work. I look upon things that i’ve bought, especially for the kids, with great joy & pride. So stealing would just soil those feelings.

@ucme AWESOME answer

poisonedantidote's avatar

I would indeed do it, but it would have to be a 100% guarantee of not getting caught, and a 100% guarantee of no one getting injured or killed, both people in the team and people in the bank.

I would not tell anyone, at all, ever. As for what i would do with the money, some would go to charity, maybe even as much as 50%, the rest i would spend however i felt like. Maybe i would use some to taunt the big bosses at whatever bank i robbed. Maybe i’d mail them a brick of bills with a note saying “there is more than one way to get a big bank bonus”.

@JustJessica Why thank you for that :¬)

It depends on whose money it is – if it’s from corporations, yes I’d rob them. And I’d feel great about it.

Like ucme, I like the feeling of having earned the money that we have, HOWEVER, my car is having problems and I constantly worry about malfunctions with my kids in the car that could go really bad, my house is falling apart and the walls could quite literally cave in at any time, my husband was blessed with genetically horrible teeth and he’s in constant pain because we can’t afford insurance. So if I got a chance to take money from a bank in my area (where there are lots of money grubbing assholes anyway) then I’d take it in a heartbeat.

TexasDude's avatar

No. Not at all.

coffeenut's avatar

Would I ever!!! I have been robbed by the bank too many times to turn down a chance for some payback! It’s not like they don’t have insurance

I’d give 90% away to homeless/jobless/moneyless people, The other 10% I will use to wallpaper my house yes the bills themselves and see if anyone notices.

Seaofclouds's avatar

Nope, I wouldn’t do it.

Coloma's avatar

No…

because one never ‘gets away’ with anything that is a blight on their conscience.

My own moral authority would not allow it, nor would I wish to carry the burden of comprimising my own integrity.

‘Integrity’ means, doing the right thing whether or not someone is watching! ;-)

JilltheTooth's avatar

Nope. Not unless my kid was literally starving.

partyparty's avatar

No most certainly not…... I would send my SO to do it for me !!

Seaofclouds's avatar

@JilltheTooth If we were starving, I’d just go steal the food from the store before I would try to rob a bank (much easier in my opinion). ;-)

JilltheTooth's avatar

Yeah, but it’s guaranteed we wouldn’t get caught for the bank job. I like those odds.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Providing no one got hurt, yes I would.

wundayatta's avatar

No. It would go against my sense of morality. It would break the compact we have that creates a society that can live together. It would have much larger implications than just taking money from the bank. The bank has depositors, and even though the bank is insured, they would be hurt. More than that, even though the risk is shared over millions of people, I’m hurting all of them just a bit.

A very tiny amount of pain felt by millions of people vs a very large pain felt by a few people. The millions hardly notice it. So does that make it ok to inflict that pain on them? What if other people start doing it?

The truth is that you can never get away with it. There are always consequences. I’d rather be a person who helps build up the world rather than one who tears it down. But that’s just me.

shego's avatar

Yes yes I would, as long as nobody gets hurt. I wouldn’t tell anybody, but I would hope to help the economy by passing out money to those in need. I’m sure I would buy some properties so I could give people who don’t have a place to live a home somewhere they can call their own.

erichw1504's avatar

Yes, if only it is money from big corporations and no single people. I would only steal enough to rid myself of all debt and have just a bit extra to get by for a little while.

ragingloli's avatar

If I did I would then distribute it among the poor, as it should.
(and I am sure the banks are fully insured for that anyway)

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

No,because it is wrong to steal.

Have a good friend that has a “bucket load of money” and he once said, “maybe Jesse James was an okay guy!” Referring to the banks taking our tax dollars and keeping it…

My answer is no!

john65pennington's avatar

You know i hate a thief and no bank robbing for me. i earn my paycheck and proud of it.

Coloma's avatar

@john65pennington

Yes, and besides, I am pre-wired by the powers that be to not even TRY anything of a duplicitous nature…the universe would send a hefty dose of instant karma my way I am certain of it…like an exploding dye bag! lol

It’s not in my nature to be dishonest, but…even if it were, the return volley would be swift and severe! haha

jca's avatar

no, and my reasoning is that I would not trust that it was a guarantee that I would get away with it. I would be so nervous that I might get caught, that it would not be worth it.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

No. Even if I never got caught it would remain in my conciseness for a good amount of time. Also even though it’s not possible for one person to make a big dent in the amount of money the bank has imagine if everyone robbed the bank because they wouldn’t get caught.
For all the people that the only thing holding you back from doing bad things is that you might get caught I pity you.

JustJessica's avatar

Thank you everyone for all the awesome answers. As we all know there is no right or wrong answer for this question.

josie's avatar

Yes there is. The right answer is no.

I would just love to visit my bank on horseback with my moll by my side put a round through the ceiling just to show I mean business and then ride off into the sunset with a satchel full of money. I mean jeeez, doesn’t everyone?

Mikewlf337's avatar

No because I would be doing more harm to others. I can never take what is not mine because I still would feel that it isn’t mine because it really isn’t mine.

Xena's avatar

I probably would. I’d feel bad about it, but I think I could get over it eventually. Like when I fill a hot tub with cash and roll around in it.

Brian1946's avatar

I would if I knew that it would only result in the reduction of compensation for and/or assets of multimillionaires and billionaires.

Then I’d give that to the victims of the banking industry and others who have lost their jobs, can’t find work, and are still looking.

However, I realize that robbing a bank would probably result in hurting others instead.

JustJessica's avatar

I guess if I knew it wouldn’t hurt anyone and I wouldn’t get caught I’d do it… To answer my own question. I’d probably feel bad about it but I would be charitable with it, so maybe that would help me feel better. But I’d only do it because I totally needed the money not just to do it.

MissAusten's avatar

Fuck yeah I’d rob that shit! If I could get away with it and no one would get hurt, you bet your ass I’d be out the door with that money! It’s insured! Or maybe I’ve just seen Point Break too many times.

If anyone at the bank got fired because I’d robbed it, I’d just send them a cut to keep them afloat until they found a new job. :) I don’t know what else I’d do with it. How much does one usually get from robbing a bank? Like, could I buy a house? A new car? Or just put it away until the kids go to college? Are we talking millions, hundreds of thousands, or tens of thousands?

Probably I’d come home and ask the following question on Fluther: “If you hypothetically got away with robbing a bank, how would you go about using your husband’s small business to launder the money? Is it possible, and what would be the best way to do this?” Then I’d throw a big ass party!

JustJessica's avatar

@MissAusten my favorite answer!!!! You sound like a great partner in crime!

rts486's avatar

No, it’s still wrong even if you can get away with it.

MissAusten's avatar

I think all the lurve I got for my answer means everyone who said no secretly wanted to say “Fuck yeah!” :P

incendiary_dan's avatar

If I could do it without getting caught, I’d be doing it every weekend. Screw the banks. I wouldn’t even need the incentive of the money, though I’d take enough for my living and plans and such.

Mikewlf337's avatar

The morals of the ones who said yes are the ones who question my morals. Such hypocrisy and it makes me sick.

MissAusten's avatar

@Mikewlf337 I don’t think I’ve ever questioned anyone’s morals here. If you can find an example of me questioning your morals I’d love to see it. I also don’t think anyone who says yes is morally corrupt. I mean really, what are the odds such a situation would come up and anyone would have the chance to act on such a thing? That’s like telling your spouse he or she can hook up with their favorite celebrity if they ever have the chance. It’s easy to say yes because we all know it’s never going to happen. Sheesh.
