I just got a new Toshiba because the previous one lasted over 5 years without signifant problems.
Welcome to Fluther!
I agonized over mine not so long ago…in the end i settled for neither of your options and went for samsung as the reviews for durability were really good. I have been lugging it about all over the place and its been great. Good build quality is as important as price and software if your going to bounce it about all over the shop like I do…so far its done very well in all areas and works a charm
Get the Tosh. I’ve had two, and never any problems. Had a Compaq before that same company as HP), and it was trash,
Anecdotally, I’ve known three people with HPs that were built poorly and died after a couple years, and I’m not impressed with their low-end machines. I regard Toshibas much more highly.
I have had two HP Pavilion laptops. They are not cheap but they are great machines. One lasted 18 months and the other 14 months. The motherboard burned out in both of them and HP were not sympathetic. I will not buy HP again.
I would go Toshiba for reliability reasons. I would avoid HP computers like syphilis; not something I want even for free, and definitely not something I would actually spend money to get. Stories like @flutherother‘s are all too common with HPs, while Toshibas are near/at the top of the list for reliability. In that regard, they are night and day.
I have a nice Toshiba top-tier T135 that is holding up quite well and getting the job done. It only cost $500, so if you are looking for a 13” lightweight with long battery life, you should consider it’s replacement, the T235–1370 I would avoid the AMD models and stick with Intel CPUs though.
If you want something bigger, or care less about battery life than I do, then there are other great Toshibas. There really are no great HPs though.
