Was the decision to give the 2022 world cup to Qatar biased?

Quite honestly, I don’t really care that much, as I am not a great soccer fan. However, the choice to award the 2022 world cup to Qatar seems very strange, as it is not exactly a great tourist destination. I would have thought FIFA would want to grow the supposed “world game” in one of the growth markets, such as US or Australia. What does everyone think?

I guess they had the biggest bribe budget.
They like Homophobic sharia law states with massive bank balances. But Prince William, Cameron and Beckham have this mistaken belief that they are entitled to everything they want, and that somehow foreigners find them as charming as they find themselves. Fortunately that particular misconception was brutually quashed by FIFA. As for Russia, don’t fuck with the Alpha Dog woof!
Qatar offered the most money to build facilities.
Personally, I feel like the US should stop competing for these types of events. The Winter Olympics should always take place in Austria, the Summer in Greece and the World Cup in Brazil. End of story. Everything else is unnecessary.

I think it really is a dirty business. They say where there is smoke there is fire and the rumors of bribes and vote buying abound so I think the fact is, Qatar had the most money to grease the most palms!
Aren’t all such decisions biased?
Hahaha!! Yeah good old Mafifa…... fifa being likened to the mafia, for those who don’t follow. Corrupt money grabbing putrid little bastards. Just about sums it up. The funniest part is, Qatar are now touting the idea for the tournament to be played in January!?! See because the weather in July is like going on vacation to the Sun! Supposedly going to build air conditioned stadia allowing for an indoor world cup. So the options available are, a world cup played in winter or indoors!!! Way to go Sepp Blatter & your greedy underhanded acolytes! Disgruntled England 2018 supporter here….....2 votes!!!!!!!! yeah right!
Who knows what goes on behind closed doors.
Why does a surprising decision always mean the fix is in? Maybe they just wanted to have a tournament in the Arab world.
Qatar is a very wealthy nation. I suspect that’s the main reason.
Football and 50°c heat don’t make sense to me! I really don’t understand the decision.
@Mat74UK – They are building air conditioned stadiums which are to be dismantled after the cup and sent to developing countries. Just what developing countries need, I guess??????
FIFA can almost be described as a criminal conspiracy. There was little effort to conceal the goings-on behind the arras. While I hold no brief for either the US or Great Britain, the decision was not right. Now they are telling us that there is a policy to let everybody have a turn. I will believe that when Barbados is invited to make a bid.
I think that the general consensus is that it is political rather than merit based. I suspect that is the case. Thanks for your responses.
Almost all decisions in international football are political.
I think it was an excellent decision. The deeper message is this:
The world community does not exclude Muslim countries from world events. The world cup used to be a European and South American event. Then came North America, Asia and Africa. The Middle East is a logical next step.
@mattbrowne I guess it’s been long enough now that most people have forgotten the Munich Massacre of 1972 when the entire Israeli Olympic Team was murdered by Arab Terrorists.
@YARNLADY – I was ten and I still remember. Where is the connection with Qatar?
Qatar is an Arab country with a history of being constantly at odds over border disputes, and heavily aligned against Israel. Their culture is very similar to other Gulf countries and has a very low score in human rights issues. They have been subjected to a suicide/murderer bomber in the past.
So you’re saying because PLO terrorists killed Israeli athletes in 1972, Qatar should not host a sports event in 2022?
@mattbrowne No, but people tend to tar all Arabs with the same feather, and that had been a factor in the past. This is evidence that they have “forgotten”.
@YARNLADY – What about when they gunned down Doc Brown in the Mall car park?
@Mat74UK I don’t recognize the reference – was it a world wide sporting event?
I have a relative who was an Olympic Games contender. He has told me nightmarish stories of political corruption in the Games (tell me where there ISN’T corruption)! Nothing has changed.
