you cannot just rename a file and use it as a ringtone. Try using garage band if you’re on a mac to create a ringtone.

to rename a file you browse to the location you have saved the song to and click twice (slowly) on the files name. When the text changes you can type in a new name.

jamms is incorrect. That’s the old, hard way to do it. With the new version of iTunes (7.4.1) all you have to is drag the the AAC file to the desktop (or wherever), and rename the file extension to ”.m4r”, then double click the file and it will be added to iTunes. It will now show up in your ringtones.

Sync it with your iPhone and you’re done. Booyah.

Note: make sure the file is less than 30 seconds long.

the new version of iTunes is 7.6.2 and apple stopped that solution with in a week of introducing ringtones. unless you’re using the 1.10 fireware and an old version of iTunes, that will not work. I just tried with the most recent iTunes and it will not import, to either itunes or the iPhone.

I have 7.6.1 and iPhone firmware 1.1.4 and everything works fine for me. Weird.

you have file extensions turned off. Check the view tab of the folder options from inside the control panel to turn them on
