How to get rid of skunk smell?

Asked by vade66 (68points) December 5th, 2010

My two dogs got sprayed in the face by a skunk and, as you probably know, stink. My Jack Russel ran through the house and rubbed his face in the carpet and now the house stinks. They are now locked up in the garage with a blanket, a dog house, a small heater, two bones, two balls, and a rubber goose. Oh, and my Jack Russel got some of the spray in his eyes. Will that hurt him?
How can I get the smell out of my dogs, my carpet, and, if possible, my house?

Tomato juice might be helpful in bathing your dogs.. although I can’t say for sure. I’ve always heard the same.
Did you flush your dog’s eyes?

As for the carpet and whatnot, try a mixture of vinegar, baking soda and a few drops of dish soap. I wouldn’t use tomato juice on your carpet.

The best results I ever had and we used it on many dogs in the kennel and grooming salon, is Massengill Douche. The old yellow powder in a jar. I assume it is still available. Mix it double the suggest strength. Wash the dog thoroughly with shampoo or bar of soap, towel dry, then absolutely saturate it with the douche. I always put it into an old dish soap bottle, they make an excellent dispenser. Do not towel that off, let them drip dry in a crate. This works as well as anything when the dog is dry (and is a lot less messy than tom juice) however when the dog gets wet the smell will come back and that can go on for a long time!
Good luck.

The link @syz posted has the general recipe that we use when the ranch dogs get sprayed. Which is pretty often. It works pretty well most of the time, but don’t expect them to smell like normal dogs right away.

We also found that giving them a bath/massage with Pepsi does.. something.. to the smell to make it go away if the first concoction doesn’t work. I suppose it’s along the same lines as the classic tomato juice cure..

I’m only assuming here, but the dog probably rubbed his face in the carpet to try and get the skunk spray off. Check his eyes asap.
