Just out of curiousity, has anyone ever used a dollar store pregnancy test and if so, what were you thinking?

Asked by spykenij (1831points) December 6th, 2010

I have seen pregnancy tests and ovulation tests at the dollar store fairly recently and I just wondered if anyone ever really used them, was it accurate, why go so cheap?

A little too conveniently placed next to the dollar box of condoms, I’d say.

I know that conditioning makes us think that brands are better and that sometimes non-popular brands are as good if not better…. but….

[bleep] that.

I don’t think it matters the brand on these particular items. Just like aspirin, naproxen, milk, there are just certain things-that whether you buy a ‘name brand’ or a ‘knock-off’ it works the same.
Also, I’ve noticed most things at the $ store are actually more expensive than Walmart, go figure? For the most part those items, condoms, pregnancy tests, etc, are normally kept at the register, you have to bring a card to get the product- like sudafed. As for the $ store pregnancy test being effective, yes, well the pregnancy test anyways. And this was the last of 6 at home tests for me to take and the only to come out positive.
As far as an ovulation test, why spend more $ than needed? Obviously if someone is buying an item like that they plan on having a child, so why the hell spend anymore $ than you need be. Because ONCE you have that baby, the cheaper you can buy something the better!

I haven’t used a dollar store test (or any test for that matter), but I would. Most of the time a home test is just a precursor to a doctor’s appointment to verify the results anyway, no? Why spend more than you have to?

I haven’t, but I would. I used a pharmacy store brand, not a brand name, when I did use one and I don’t see much difference.

I used one I bought at the PX (similar to walmart type store, just on the Army post) for a dollar and it was accurate. I don’t see why the ones at the dollar store would be any different. I don’t see the point in spending a lot of money on something I’m going to pee on and then go to the doctor’s for them to confirm anyway.

I bought one for $2 at Dollar General. I bought it because my husband had just gotten laid off from work and we were broke. The test was positive. We have a beautiful little girl. No harm done

I see that it’s pretty apparent that a simple test is a precursor to a doctor’s visit. I kind of wondered what (if any) differences there would be between a good name brand and a dollar store version, like do they both test for the presence of progesterone or whatever other hormones women who have congealed, alien babies have. To be honest, I was more curious to know if people actually used them because the whole “you usually get what you pay for” thing. @Samantha_Rae – follow along and I’m sure you will be quite entertained. I’m a typical Aquarius and do I ever come up with whoppers! Glad to know you got a chuckle out of it :)

@spykenij They all test for HCG in the urine. Yes, you do get what you pay for sometimes. But, you can simply read the box to see what you get. Some tests are more sensitive than others and are able to detect lower amounts of HCG than other tests. It will say that information on the box though, so if you wanted to compare that, you could. Some tests advertise that you can test 5 days before your missed period. Those are usually the more sensitive tests. Some have digital read outs while others have pink or blue dye that makes a line for a positive result. There are a lot of options. I took a name brand one that a friend gave me and I bought the dollar one I mentioned above. They both showed the positive result. I wouldn’t have paid for the name brand one because I don’t see the point.

Cool. I’m a non-breeder (aka – raging bull dyke), so I won’t be having kids in my lifetime. It also doesn’t help having no uterus to have one in either, but that’s beside the point. I never wanted kids of my own. I don’t want to be responsible for possibly screwing someone’s life up because I have problems. I’m good with my friend’s kids who call me Uncle Nikki :)

I’d be thinking “Wish I’d sprung for the brand-name condoms. Spartans are not as good as Trojans.”

@Blueroses – Didn’t Spartans go naked all the time? I wouldn’t trust their condoms! ;)
