What should I engrave on my luggage?

Asked by judyprays (1309points) December 6th, 2010

I am about to purchase a handsome luggage piece that has an engraving option. I’ve never owned nice luggage, let alone anything with personalization options – so I’d love some input. The first thought was my name – judy, or my last name – prays – but that seems boring. I’m looking for something that will enhance my travel experience as well as other travelers’ experience. You know, something fun to see on a baggage carousel. I’m open to any suggestions of words or short phrases (there’s a 6 letter maximum) – or any positive or negative stories about personalized gear experiences.

Your initials and the last four of your SS # for ID purposes.

Here’s a GREAT idea for personalized engraving that will get your luggage kid-glove treatment wherever you take it… or leave it:

I used to travel a lot. My nice luggage got beat continuously. I have my initials repeated on each lock mechanism for id purposes and a large piece of bright green ambulance retro-reflective tape on each of the 6 surfaces. It is readily identifiable on any luggage carousel.
Not losing my luggage always enhances my travel experience.

I strongly feel the only appropriate option – especially for a “handsome” piece of luggage – is to use your initials. I honestly think this would “enhance your travel experience as well as other travellers’ experience” because it’s classy, and it’s always pleasant and satisfying to see (and to own!) something classy, particularly where travel is concerned.

“Something fun to see on a baggage carousel” has no place on a “handsome” piece of luggage, in my opinion. If you want something fun, buy one of those hard cases covered in pink polka-dots of something.

As for using your full name, not only is it unconventional but (for a reason I can’t quite pin down) it smacks of “nouveau riche” and/or a certain modern self-centredness…

@nicobanks unless your name is Pierre Cardin or Louis Vuitton, for example.

I don’t think I have ever noticed luggage with an engraving, kind of neat. Although, I do my best to buy luggage that does not look like it is worth a lot. I think intials, or do you have a nickname maybe? Or, NoWork.

I strongly agree with @nicobanks.

Who’s looking for fun at a luggage carrousel? Initials are classy, useful and appropriate.

i think it’s delightfully post modern, but i see your point @nicobanks. thanks for the insight.

write “Dont F**king touch my luggage or I’ll kill You!!!” :)

thanks for all your input guys! i’m going to go with initials – classsic!

@judyprays are you going to put your last name in the middle or at the end?

nicobanks's avatar

@CyanoticWasp I don’t think so. There’s a difference between the owner’s engraved mark and the brand mark (or designer’s name, in your examples). If Louis Vitton has his full name engraved on his own personal luggage, I’d be very surprised.
