Why won't iTunes recognize my iPod?

I plug it in and my laptop recognizes it as a hard drive but it won’t show up on iTunes. I tried to restore it while connected to my laptop but it hasn’t worked. Any ideas?

One possible solution. Open iTunes. Under the settings/preferences panel – click on the ‘Devices’ tab. Make sure the box is unchecked for “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.”
