What kind of a name is (Pietro) Yon?

Asked by Jeruba (56062points) December 7th, 2010

I know that Pietro A. Yon is the name of the composer of “Gesu Bambino,” one of my all-time favorite Christmas carols. I know that he was Italian-born and lived most of his life in the U.S. So this is not a question about this person per se.

Rather, I’m wondering about the name. “Yon” does not resemble any other Italian name I know. Is it indeed Italian in origin? If so, is there a meaning and history? Do you know of any other names that come from the same region or the same ethnic or dialect subgroup?

I’m just curious, and that’s all.

Thanks, @Kayak8. Your second link might well be the answer, considering how close his birthplace was to the border of France. I’ve wondered about that name for many years. I think that answers it!
