What is a term for co-dependent opposities, in that they wouldn't exist (in definition) without the other?

Asked by JonnyCeltics (2721points) December 7th, 2010

…or that their existence is buttressed and further make stark by virtue of their opposition.

I.E. Black and White. White is White because black is it’s opposite and vice versa.

I kept thinking tautology or self-evident truth, but they are just…well, not correct.

I am talking about postmodernisms reaction to modernism, and the way an author has presented it is based on polarization, e.g. purpose v play, hierarchy v anarchy. He is positing that the area of synthesis of these dualisms is where the answers to postmodernism’s definition might be. So I am stating that because they are dual in nature, they are inseparable, therefore, there is no difference, so to speak, because of their codependency.

So I am looking for a term which can slide into both modern and postmodern realms…which is taking me a long time to reach, but I am inching closer. Just some insight. Thanks :)

@JonnyCeltics Holy crap… Philosophy is so… It’s not that I can’t get it so much as that my interest in debating it for more than 5 minutes ended years ago. Are you taking a class on it, or is this more of a self-lead search?

I am in a master’s program at nyu in media, culture and communication…my paper is on the juxtaposition of the queer movement and postmodernism and comparing both of their searches for identity vs hegemonic and dualistic forces…! Sounds really high-brow, but I just think better in theory as opposed to concrete examples, etc…. :/ which leads to too much work.

Regarding who I am using for this paper is David Harvey, Michael Warner and this nutjob (but he is awesome)....whose name (last name that it) is Zizek.

I’m going out on a limb to say you’re the first person to have tautology as a question topic.

Complementary?

As I’m typing this I realize this might not be appropriate in any conversation, but it doesn’t feel excessive at all. @JonnyCeltics This question is bad and you should feel bad.

@gasman – nice. Not exactly what I was thinking of, but definitely akin.

I wonder if the concept of dualism includes things like predator/prey relationship, where the predator is obviously dependent on prey, but where the prey made be dependent on predators to cull the population and to prevent extermination due to over-population.
