I loved the Beatles and sang over 100 of their songs in my band. And John was one of the best song writers ever. I have a hard time with it being 30 years ago seems like YESTERDAY!

How about a memory?

30 years ago today I remember standing with a fairly large group of people who spontaneously assembled under the Zilker park Christmas tree (a local land mark in Austin this time of year) after hearing of the tragedy and singing a seemingly infinite chorus of “Give Peace a Chance”.

(Geez, has it really been 30 years?!?!?!?)

@TheOnlyNeffie A bit of trivia for you: I saw a documentary where that song is the song that set his killer over the edge. “Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can…” Supposedly, Mark David Chapman had taken that verse to heart and when he saw how John Lennon lived in a pretty lavish lifestyle, he felt betrayed and decided to kill John Lennon.
My favorite songs are Give Peace a Chance and Imagine.

I love this John Lennon quote:-

“For those of you in the cheap seats I’d like ya to clap your hands to this one; the rest of you can just rattle your jewelry!”

Always like “Imagine.”

For our last number, i’d like to ask your help. Would the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands. The rest of you, just rattle your jewelery.” Said to the audience at a royal variety performance with the Queen Mother in attendance. Nice one scouse lad! Damn those simultaneous posts! Great quote anyway!

Hey Jude is probably the only Beatles song that I actually like.

I knew John Lennon was different when I was ten and read “A Spaniard in the Works”.
and,

She’s well acquainted
With the touch of the velvet hand
Like a lizard on a window pane
The man in the crowd
With the multicolored mirrors
On his hobnail boots

I had the poster that came with the Imagine album. It’s a black and white drawing of Lennon playing piano. I love it. I’m not sure what happened to it after college, but my dad assures me it’s in storage… I hope so. It’s beautiful.

My friend Bob Palmer wrote John’s obituary, then shot up with Yoko for 3 days.
I got to hear some private tapes, including an astounding Strawberry Fields.

I love the song “Working Class Hero”.

Although “Run For Your Life” isn’t my favorite Lennon composition, to me the lyrics are the most intriguing:

“Well I’d rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won’t know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That’s the end’a little girl

Well you know that I’m a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can’t spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That’s the end’a little girl

Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I’ve said
Baby, I’m determined
And I’d rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That’s the end’a little girl

I’d rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won’t know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That’s the end’a little girl”

What was he thinking and what drove such an apparently evolved person to write such an apparently misogynic tune?
