Did WikiLeaks bring us into a new era of Info Wars?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30960points) December 8th, 2010

So some computer hacker supporters of WikiLeaks (not WikiLeaks employees) decided to get back at MasterCard for canceling their terms of service for WikiLeaks money transfers.

MasterCard Corporate web site would not load this morning at 10am.

Apparently the hackers say this is only the beginning…
____________

Now I know there have been numerous other cyber attacks in the past and will be in the future. They go on every day… But private hackers attacking corporate structures, I believe, was for personal monetary gain, or grievances, or just the challenge of doing it. But now…

But now there seems to be A Cause behind it. The hacker has heard the rallying cry and are swarming to the aid of their WikiLeaks affections.

Shall a new era of Info Wars begin, where the gain is not for money, or stealing secrets… But instead, this new Info War seems to be one fought over ethics, truth, liberties… Heaven forbid it becomes a Cyber Jihad.

The people behind the retaliation against the oppressors call themselves “Anonymous”
They may say they do this for the cause, but really, they only do this for the Lulz (and to fight what they perceive as a direct threat to their own existence). But mostly for the Lulz.
I will say just this:
Anonymous is Legion. They do not forgive, they do not forget. Expect them.

I’m reminded of a fragment of the lyrics to Jefferson Starship’s War Movie, a song from the 80s…

… three hundred master computer killers…
and wondering if that was supposed to be hyphenated: ’computer-killers’.

Interesting times.

Posting a list of stolen credit card numbers is really shitty, even for Anonymous.

this is all going to be a good practical exercise for I.T. people to work with. There will always be hackers and those who try to outsmart them. Hopefully the govt. might get better at keeping things they don’t want out, from getting away from them.
