I know that to seperate the iron fillings you would use a magnet, but how do you seperate salt and sand?

Salt would dissolve in water, but sand wouldn’t. Then you could strain out the water and let it evaporate.

Even more challenging would be separating salt and sugar. I can think of at least two ways to do it.

Take a plastic comb and rub it with to give it a static charge. It will attract salt but not sand.

You can use tweezers and a good magnifier. Salt crystals are cubic. Or do what they said, dissolve the salt in water, it is much easier.
