For me, some of the best ones I’ve heard are via word-of-mouth, even in the instances where I haven’t seen the film.
I’m listening to the soundtrack from ‘Ravenous’ right now. It’s very good.

i love that soundtrack!
there are, of course, a million different ways to answer your question. some of my favorites:
kundun, michael clayton, bladerunner, dances with wolves, magnolia, the mission, state and main
I don’t know if they have a soundtrack… But I really like the music from the SAW movies.
also television: the new battlestar galactica and twin peaks both have dynamite scores.
True, there are many I like. One can also divide them up into compositions and compilations, both of which can be great. I don’t remember Bladrunner’s, I’ll check it.
some recent faves are: Seven Years in Tibet,The Hours, Notes on a Scandal, Eastern Promises, The Constant Gardner, Babel, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Pride & Prejudice.
I’m particularly fond of the soundtrack to Memoirs of a Geisha; John Williams, YoYo Ma and Itzhak Perlman!
Sorry its not a movie but this soundtrack is just too amazing not to mention. It’s from the japanese anime Trigun , great show too.
Danny Elfman’s Batman score is my all-time favorite… followed closely by his score for Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
The Royal Tenenbaums is lovely and is the one that immediately pops into my mind.
I concur. All of Wes Anderson’s films have great soundtracks. Mark Mothersbaugh is a genius.
@sndfreQ ~ check out Yo Yo Ma’s lovely solos on Seven Years in Tibet
the piano, twin peaks, kids
I like Pirates of the Caribbean 2 with the pipe organs
Blade Runner with its awesome Vangelis soudtrack, those synths rock my socks.
American Beauty and Finding Nemo for their brilliant Thomas Newman soundtracks, which have a beautiful ‘hollow’ and elegant sound to them.
Fight Club for its rough techno Dust Brothers soundtrack.
Pans Labyrinth soundtrack is beautiful and haunting, I listen to it when I want to unwind. When I was in High School my favorite was Danny Elfmans “Beetljuice”(also a huge Oingo Boingo
fan).
Penelope Spheeris “Suburbia” and “Romper Stomper”
Anything by Danny Elfman or John Williams is incredible. I still get chills listening to the Star Wars soundtrack. Alex North’s track for Ben Hur was great. The track for 2001 Planet of the Apes is good. I still listen to the Blade Runner track every few weeks.
My dad was a fan of that stupid Titantic soundtrack, in fact when we first got a plasma TV with surround sound he would bring everyone into the room and turn both on in sync and let it play. It was the scene when “Rose” stood on the front of the ship and said like I“m the king of the world or some BS.
I like the lion king! lol
Pick of Destiny, by Tenacious D
Air’s original work for the Virgin Suicides is incredible.
The Zoolander, Juno, and Garden State soundtracks all also come to mind.
Across The Universe
Requiem For A Dream
Garden State
One Tree Hill (tv)
I’m really enjoying The Darjeerling Limited soundtrack the last couple of weeks!
My two cents…
Eddie and the Cruisers
Miami Vice Soundtrack (original show)
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Deathproof
Avenue Q (yeah, it’s Broadway, so what? =)
Spamalot (more Broadway, say what you will)
The Crow (epic soundtrack)
Singles
The Departed (there, that make up for the Broadway?)
Garden State
how about across the universe?
edit: nevermind.. i see someone has said this already
Gattaca, a great movie that a lot of people missed, has a beautiful soundtrack by composer Michael Nyman.
Great movie, very Brave New World, I didn’t even think about the soundtrack
thanks
Desperado staring antonio banderas and salma hayak
I just realized that no one has mentioned the “About a Boy” soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy. It’s great!
I liked A Kinight’s Tale and City of Angels. They both have great soundtracks.
Love Jones Soundtrack is one of my favorites, very funky and romantic. @scamp City of Angels Soundtrack is beautiful.
Planet of the Apes by Jerry Goldsmith
Best soundtrack: The Big Chill
Best score: The Mission
Please note the difference between a score and a soundtrack.
Closer soundtrack with Damien Rice. Great movie, great album.
I’d recommend the soundtrack to ‘Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels’. Very varied styles but all excellent.
The Graduate deserves a mention.
@Ezraglenn Good choices, especially garden state and juno
@Cake7 also, good choices
I’ll mention one I haven’t seen up there yet….the first Matrix Soundtrack (not reloaded, or revolutions)...lot of good tunes on that one.
I forget the Bernard Herrmann soundtracks for Psycho and Vertigo.
Soundtrack to Garden State is amazing
I love the Garden State soundtrack! Another fav is City of Angels. A couple scores I love are Braveheart and Glory. Or if you want a good brooding one for the background during Halloween, check out Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
