Help me investigate the "Never Too Late" group?

Asked by YARNLADY (46572points) December 9th, 2010

Is this organization legitimate? I have looked on the internet, but I can’t seem to find enough information. http://www.nevertoolate.org/

What is it, like a Make a Wish Foundation for senior citizens?

Just reading the Press Page to me seems to make them more than legit!! All I know is when I was stranded at Indy Intl Airport after 9/11 I have never ever seen such an outpouring of kind generous people in all my life. And it appears Bob H is dead center in this same genuine desire to help those who need it most! Just my humble opinion!

I looked it up on Charity Navigator and found nothing but did a Yahoo search on ”“Bob Haverstick,” the founder of the organization and the hits I got were basically similar to the press page. Lots of articles from local papers about elderly people in their community who got their wish fulfilled, and it pretty much is a Make Wish Foundation for seniors, and all the articles said something like “wish… wish fulfilled… would not have been possible without the efforts of Bob Haverstick… from Never Too Late…”

So just from that it seems legit, but that’s never the whole story with a charity. They seem to be doing what they say they do but I wasn’t able to find any financial info, the kind that tells you how much of what they raise goes to actually doing the work and how much goes to administrative costs, fundraising, overhead, salaries, etc. but otherwise it looks legit, as far as I can tell. If it’s a small private charity they don’t have to submit their financials to anyone. So, they seem legit enough, so far. That’s all I could find.

They have a Facebook page with many stories and links.

Also, here’s a link to a couple of articles I found without much trouble:

I think it looks legit. A real American story. Really inspiring. I liked their sponsors list. Just local businesses. Really nice idea.

NTL is a registered 501c3 charity and your contribution may be tax deductible.

From Guiding Star, Never Too Late is headquartered in Indianapolis, IN 46236. It is categorized as Philanthropy, Voluntarism, and Grantmaking / (Private Grantmaking Foundations).

Never Too Late’s primary purpose is to reach out to people in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice programs and adult day care facilities, regardless of age, and help make their dreams and wishes come true. Never Too Late’s secondary purpose is to honor request from any of our elder citizens (65 and over), regardless of where they reside, provided they (or one of their family members) are willing to help.

@YARNLADY Bill seems to have this one nailed.

@BoBo1946 @BarnacleBill I’m not asking for their own publicity releases, I am asking about reviews of their organization in light of this negative BBB report.

Guiding Star provides financial information about the organization for registered users. The BBB report is that they did not provide voluntary information when asked in 2008. I’m not exactly what can be construed from that, or exactly how negative not voluntarily giving information is.

I’m not exactly the type to give to “make a wish” types of organizations that send kids to disney or things like that. My giving is usually to the Red Cross, American Heart Association, the library or educational causes.

@YARNLADY Well, then there you have it. If they are a private charity they don’t have to provide their financials to anyone and we only have the same resources that you have. Refusing to report to the BBB is not the same as having complaints filed against them with the BBB. What exactly do you want from us?

YARNLADY's avatar

@BarnacleBill I was hoping some one could find a list of charity reviews that I missed or something like that. I am usually pretty good at finding things on the internet, but information that isn’t press releases on this group seems to be missing. An anecdote of one person who received a wish just isn’t very convincing.
