How do you change the distributor on a VK commodore?

Asked by ththththth (241points) December 10th, 2010

It’s from a Holden Commodore made in 1984 from Australia.

Is there a Chilton’s manual for it?

I think it safe to say that most of the people here have never seen a Holden since we have few Aussies. That means that you may have to rely on a tech manual (like a Hayne’s or Chilton’s) that has a full tear-down, pictures, etcetera.

Some cars are difficult, and some are a snap. Replacing the distributor on an early-90s Civic is a 10 minute job, and most of that is wiping the grease off your hands afterwards, whereas even finding the distributor on an ‘89 Aerostar is an adventure. I don’t know where your Holden is on that spectrum though.

I will say that it’s generally easier if the engine is at TDC (if you don’t know what that is, maybe you shouldn’t be doing this yourself!) and it’s important not to mess up the firing order or (if applicable) the vacuum hoses.

Is it running the 3.3L 6 cylinder, or the 5.0L V8?

@jerv VK Holden Commodore. This was part of the first shape Commodore, which was essentially and Australian version of the Opel Rekord (Vauxhall Carlton) with an Opel Senator A front on it to fit in the larger Australian engines.

@FireMadeFlesh We don’t do Opel here. I think the closest we ever got was a re-branded Astra.

@jerv True, Opel are German, but I thought if I threw in those references you may recognise a similar car sold under American GM branches (Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Cadillac etc.)

None of the GM “V platform” cars made it here until the late 90s, and I think it safe to assume that they had totally different engines from the 84 Commodore.

@jerv Opel Is in California for sure

@ththththth Not to my knowledge, though I could be wrong. Of course, that doesn’t count the re-badged models like the Saturn Aura and Astra….
