Do you think a decision by the press to give no publicity to the Westboro "Baptist Church" would cause them to decrease their hateful activities such as picketing Elizabeth Edwards' funeral?

Asked by anartist (14813points) December 10th, 2010

Their outrageous activities are just hate-mongering. There is no credible religious basis for the vile things they do. I can’t understand why the press gives them the publicity they seek so outrageously. Nor can I understand how they can be considered a church. Suggestions welcome to reduce their visibility in the US.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard So you’re saying these protests are only done for the purpose of creating a potential scenerio where they could sue? Brave souls. They are taking a chance here with their lives. You can’t file lawsuits or take money with you if you’re dead. Sooner or later they are going to protest at the wrong place at the wrong time.

@Paradox, yep, that’s what I’m saying. Evidence supports it because they’ve done it before. There are also a few videos on youtube confirming that they disperse and leave when they are completely ignored.

Sooner or later they are going to protest at the wrong place at the wrong time.

This has also happened, but not to the extent you are implying which is really too bad, actually. They’ve had windows busted out of their van and they’ve been assaulted before. They make good money off their suits, I’m guessing, so it seems the risk is worth it to them.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I wasn’t aware of several things you’ve mentioned. I tend to not follow the news that much anymore (for the sake of preventing stress related illnesses) but yes, too bad that they (WBC members) have not had any “accidents” yet so far. Disgusting either way, it’s enough to lose someone that meant so much to you and to have this dung from the bottom of Satan’s boots protest this person’s funeral. Salt in the wound.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard that’s a totally new take. I thought they might be “protesters for hire” but litigious assholes, a totally new concept. I didn’t think there would have been enough brains among all of them to get 1 person through law school.

I think so. If the press doesn’t feed the evil beast, then the beast will die. Westboro Baptist, like many things, would simply go away if no one paid any attention to them. Easier said than done, but if the press is willing to cooperate then I think it’s possible. If evil, fear-mongering homophobe hypocrites scream and shout and whine in the forest and the press isn’t there to report it do they make a sound?
